I thought I would start this thread off as I think it's quite a popular idea on here and I would love to help organise the trip. There are a huge number of variables to decide on and all that's set in stone is that the date of the GP will be 24th-27th of May in Monaco. You'll all have opinions on the details of the trip so I'll post up some areas to get started on:
Length of the trip:
Route to take:
Where to stay:
How to book it: i.e. do we try and get group deals or just book individually
I'm sure there will be some big differences in how long people want to be away for, what standard of hotels you want to stay in and whether you want to have some boozy nights or be up early investigating the local roads - let's hear what you'd like!

How long would everyone want to go away for? I'd quite like to stay down at the south of France for a good few days after making all the effort to get there.
Would 2 or 3 days for the trip back seem about right or would you want to just blast back up through the alps and get home ASAP?
Who wants to include Italian factory tours in the trip?

I forgot to add that due to a clash with an important milestone wedding anniversary I won't be able to do the 2012 trip.. .. unfortunately! Before you ask there's no chance of combining the two!!
However my pal and I, and hopefully some others, are planning a trip this spring taking in Stelvio, Maranello, Tuscany, Corsica etc.
If it comes off I can report back on experiences etc.

Steve - in particular we need local knowledge on which SS in the Stelvio Park are open in May SS38 and SS301 are key. Cheers! However my pal and I, and hopefully some others, are planning a trip this spring taking in Stelvio, Maranello, Tuscany, Corsica etc.

One other thing has anyone actually done Nice to Calais in one day? Unless you share the driving this seems like a tall order.

I think deciding on a route might be tricky
If I'm honest I can see us all doing different things on the way down/up and just meeting for dinner in Nice/Monaco on Saturday and Sunday. I expect people will want to sit in different sections at the race so again probably just meet for a beer and lunch between races.
Maybe small groups of 2-3 cars together but as you say Mikey its a big financial outlay to do things you don't want to as some sort of compromise to the group.

Agree, it is going to be impossible get a complete itinerary that suits everyone but would be good if we could do the majority of the run down together.
We went down to Le Mans a few years back and a big part of that for me was the road trip with all the other cars etc...
Mike.
Fancy posting up your rough cost calculations? We went down to Le Mans a few years back and a big part of that for me was the road trip with all the other cars etc...

I'm thinking this could be a good shout with 4 people in the car http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2011... It's no sports car but that's a lot of engine! Buy, do the Gumbaw and then sell on return.

Andrew - you in or not?
Not looking good at the moment I'm afraid. I wouldn't want to do the trip in the FTO (especially with my silly new exhaust!) and I don't think I'll be onto a new car by the time this comes around. Need to swap the flat for a house with a drive before I upgrade (to a German car with numbers for a name) and this depends on Jen getting a job when she finishes uni in January. Once this happens then it's cars and houses a gogo....Hoon motor for Oli http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2011...
