Snippet of info for anyone considering fitting the above...

My cars have the wiring already in place for this in the loom (both are '86s though). There was a coiled up length of wire next to the horn on the driver's side, tie-wrapped to the main loom. The wiring colours are the same as those fitted to the fan switch in the rad; and when you connect the wires together the fan motor relay cuts in and runs the fan. So... a short length of wire to a switch inside the car and that's it!



Much easier than cutting into the loom behind the relay board; that was my original plan.

Chris, these wires are piggy backed onto the otter switch so they're switching the low current side of the relay. I'm thinking I could come up with something to illuminate a warning light if I use a double pole switch.
