Well the car should be with me by tomorrow afternoon, quite excited biggrin

One bit I know needs replacing is the Distributor, does anyone have one I could purchase for an 83 280i/know where I could get one?

Had a look on ebay but don't want to order anything without being sure and figured you guys would be the best people to ask!

Thanks guys,

If you've got one that would be great Ziga, otherwise I'll grab the one from gog440's link and yeah it was the white 280i down on the south coast

Have you tried running it yet?
Yeah to no avail, looks like it's the fuel system (thankyou for the advice ziga) so once the new bits arrive on tuesday along with the new distributor we're gonna have another shot.

@Ziga: thanks mate, I think it actually arrived today but there was no one in the house so I'm gonna have to wait till monday to collect it from the post office depot lol

Chassis doesn't seem too bad.

The interior is liveable at the moment but I'll definitely need to get the entire thing redone for me to be comfortable with it, for example the leather is all cracked and some of the carpet and wood is just looking a bit tatty.

The cloth section of the roof unfortunately has seen better days so that'll need replacing aswell.

That way you will have a runner even if it's a little tatty..You can enjoy it by using it while you are fixing it up..

On another note though..PLEASE do not try starting it until you have changed the bulkhead fuel filter and checked the condition of fuel of what comes out of the metering head side of the old one..(Tip a little into a jar and have a look..lid on and no smoking)..If it's full of nasties then it will contaminate the rest of the system...It can be a bit of a nightmare leading to expensive fixes..But if you can drive it most of the time then cost goes out the window cos you will be smiling too much...cheers...Ziga
Yeah you've got the priority list the exact way we've got it set out!

We've only really checked lines and plugs and made sure everything is hooked up the way it should be, changed the oil etc. As per your email still waiting for the fuel filter to arrive (hopefully today/tomorrow biggrin)

We're just assuming nothing works and slowly ticking things off the list lol

No not yet I'm afraid, I still think it's that package that arrived for me on saturday so will pop down to the post office tomorrow and grab it (was too busy cleaning the wedge today to do it lol)

Where abouts are the jacking points on the 280i guys? Now that more bits and pieces are arriving we want to have a proper poke about underneath.

That thread has plenty of advice. I have recently been lifting the front of mine using the trolley jack under the front cross member with the addition of a rubber ice hockey puck to avoid damage then putting axle stands at the point a bit further back on the main chassis rail near where loads of bits all join together. Not lifted the rear myself yet.
Cheers!

edit: @Ziga I have the distributor now looks awesome, will chuck it in at the weekend and then we'll sort out payment smile

Right guys after 3 months of not having time for the wedge we finally spent a few hours with it today.

After reading gog440's thread we decided to start with the fuel system.

The pump seems to be dead and all the hoses etc need replacing!

So my question to you fine people is what are the correct diameter hoses and pipes needed to replace the vast majority of the system/can you recommend somewhere or someone that I could order the whole lot from fairly easily that know's their stuff?

We've already ordered a replacement pump so no need to worry about that.

Cheers guys,

@Ziga: seems like a good website, thanks for that and it's nice to finally be getting back to work on it even if I did spend most of yesterday covered in rust, gone off petrol and mud from the drive lol!

@Gog440: The purple relay seems fine but whether or not it is is another matter entirely, will give the contacts a clean once we've replaced the vast majority of the fuel system and fit Ziga's distributor that I'm currently holding hostage. Hopefully it'll cough to life after that!

@Wedg1e: hadn't thought of that thanks

Well finally got the car up off the ground so I could start rubbing the chassis down ready for a fresh lick of paint before the fuel system gets redone.

This is gonna take a while.....

Hey guys,

whilst taking a break from rubbing the chassis down I decided to sit in the car for a bit as I hadn't done that in a few months and whilst playing with the gear stick I noticed the car appeared to have an extra gear:

R-1 3 5(?)
--2 4

I was under the impression 280i's only came with a 4 speed?

Cheers guys will have a nose around the gearbox today/tomorrow

Zig I've already read up on removing the sills to get to the outriggers so don't worry, no matter how much I don't wanna go behind there it's gotta be done at some point. Although a cursory inspection with a torch and a bit of poking has revealed that the outriggers seem solid, so just depends on the outer edges and corners that I can't see I guess.

I've managed to degrease 90% of the rear of the car and gave it a little rub and I found shiny metal after getting rid of the old paint and surface corrosion biggrin

Large amounts of the middle of the chassis still appear to be powder coated although there is alot of grease there so what it'll look like after I've taken that all off is another matter.

But with a chassis that so far seems to be in relatively good condition and the discover of an extra gear I'm approaching this with renewed vigour and hope to have made a reasonable amount of progress over the next month smile

Well now I've got a working drill and some wire brush attachments for it, progress is becoming fairly rapid. Hopefully I'm looking to slap some paint on the chassis by the end of the month so my question to you guys is what do I use?

2 coats of POR15 is currently what I'm looking at but does anyone have any other suggestions?

The other sill is off the car, not looking too bad lots of surface rust but it's still solid!

Think it's been a while since anyone has been behind the sill though laugh
