Got a few jobs lined up for the weekend then, rear brake pads being one (under the 1.5mm limit) what a pain.

There's a bit of exhaust leaking to fix and one driving light (didn't think they bothered with that but whatever.)

On the advisories it looks like I might have a steering rack problem coming up for next year - there's a bit of play on the end joints.

The only purpose I use them for is to flash someone, so one is sufficient! ;^)

To be fair I have just come back from holiday and didn't have any time to prepare it, apart from priming the washer pump that had gone dry and wasn't pumping.

So only 3 fails was a nice surprise - and I already knew about the exhaust one.

Yeah but - I don't count idle emissions, a blow from the header, and one driving light being out, as unroadworthy!!!

Hmm looks like the wedge gods were smiling on me today. A couple of months I noticed the rear pads were a bit low and started on the offside one, which took about 2 hours to get undone, so I gave up and put it back together, as I didn;t have time to do the other side.

Of course the MoT picked up on this, so today I started on the offside one - all done in ten minutes! The nearside one took 20 minutes despite being taken apart before. So that's the brakes done. The main pain was dropping the little retaining clips - twice - one went down my shirt...

It's been the rule for years that any lights fitted have to work... I suppose the idea being that the makers wouldn't have fitted them unless they had a purpose.
Actually the fail was on a "position" light - which seems to be the new terminology for a sidelight. Yes the sidelight bulb was blown, new one fitted in 5 minutes (you can just reach inside the front grille to get at it.

The driving light not working appears to be immaterial and doesn't even figure on the advisories. I think it's a common misconception that "any light fitted has to work", if there is an optional rear fog lamp fitted then that has to work, but the reversing lights don't figure in the test, nor do front fogs or driving lights.

So my next job is high HC. The CO is at 1.3% which is fine but the HC is approaching 3000 ppm. The limit is 1200. I suppose I can raise the idle speed.... any other tips? I'll also check the plugs are all connected and working.

The CO is nominal. I have rechecked it with my Gunsons and raised it a little.

I also had a "coolant leak" advisory - one of the heater T joints was snapped when I picked up the car - so I wonder if it was running too hot? I have since made up some replacements with my plumbing skills.

There is a slight lumpiness to the idle, so I'll investigate and sort out any poorly firing cylinders.

I think I got the most out of the rear pads by the way....

As I said I put it in after coming back from me hols - had intended to do a pre-check but didn't have time. One sidelight is hardly going to be a safety issue especially if you bear in mind that the headlights are up on "sidelight function" too, it's a formality, really.

Sooo... retest today, all passed, a few advisories to keep an eye on for next year.

Nothing yet I stuck my spare pair of 15"'s on there and the old ones are back in storage.

At some point I may send it to the same lot that looked after Chris's buckled rim, and have it polished up. My rears could also do with a polish/refurb too.

Yes you can get them in stainless - it was a topic here a few years go. They would be 12-point instead of 10-point.

The original 10-point ones are harder - 12-point is much more "standard". So it's the disassembly that is usually the pain.

Getting back the the MoT I was pleasantly surprised that the garage revved it up a bit for the HC test - so I didn't have to fix anything ;^) Apparently you are allowed to do that "for older cars"....
