Hi Peeps...Well i was really looking forward to going to the "Wings and Wheels" show at Dunsfold today so i left out at 08.00am..Its a hour and half journey but as its the wk holiday weekend i thought even if it takes 3 hours i will still get there early enough....Pah!!...Took me two hours to get to the Horsham road which is about 2 miles from Dunsfold..Two hours later I get one mile..12.30..I saw a Spitfire fly over and what a beautiful sight it was as i absolutely love WW2 war birds..And TBH that was the only reason i went...However as i watched the spitty fly over the trees above me i saw him drop his wheels...Obviously to land, Well that killed it for me so i thought fk it...I turned round to head home...Although i did stop at a local pub for a roast beef dinner and a pint of their best bitter...While i was there i saw this black line in the sky...You could argue that its the shadow of the vapour trail next to it which was my first thought...But the line moved slowly across the sky in a straight line and the vapour trail stayed where it was...Very strange...I have seen this last year where i live in the winter and this year in the winter i have pictures of it but it looks lower or wider...

Just saw this....

I only live 30 miles from their base.....get the BBMF overhead all the time, as I live where the A1 meets the A46, and they do seem to navigate by landmarks.

They seem to fly everywhere at low altitude, and come right over my back garden - the sound of six Merlin engines gets an old git like me teary-eyed every time. cry

We are doubly blessed - with the Red Arrows based about 20 miles away at Scampton, and normally flying everywhere at 250 feet in a perfect diamond formation, we get them over the back garden weekly too..... and they even came over with the smoke on the other day, and all 10 planes in two Vees of 5.
You are blessed indeed sir...I envy you already....smile

Mark, when I first saw that picture taken through the windscreen, my heart nearly stopped. I thought your screen had cracked again (God forbid). It wasn't untill I read the writing I realised it was the planes in the sky. Then I thought , doesn't things look so much better in the sky through a Pilkington glass biggrin

Tony...I took that pic when i was at the pub eating my roast beef and tatties...smile

cloud9....Vulcan amazing....(Instead of fking..smile)...Am i right in saying that the Vulcan has run out of flight hours and will fly no more??....What a tragedy....cry
This was one of the main things that peed me off about it all..That i might of missed the last time it ever flies...I used to see it every year when i was a child at a local airshow ..It always scared the shyte out of everyone but it was the main attraction every year without fail...What a machine....

Vulcan is supposed to be doing Bournemouth and Shoreham airshows next weekend and I've been told will fly over Eastbourne after Shoreham on Saturday.....as far as I know all scheduled flights for this year are ok its next year that's the problem....

Both Lancasters will perform a flypast of East Kirkby Airport on Tuesday 2nd September at 3pm where a 3rd Lancaster is based which will be taxying at the same time, so three Lancasters together which will be another once in a lifetime sight. Unfortunately the third Lancaster 'Just Jane'is not airworthy at present, but efforts are being made to return her to the skies.....

Cheers, Al.
Thanks for that..Shoreham airshow....scratchchin...Its only 50 odd miles from me...Lets hope the weather holds out cos i think I'm going.....smile

Hey Zig.... I'm pretty sure the con trail you saw would not have been the Vulcan. As far as I remember the Vulcan can only fly VFR so it would not be above 10k feet.

As for the shadow.... The cloud layer could be many thousands of feet below the contrail hence moving at different speeds.
Could be but I'm not so sure...I wish i had taken a couple more pics as the shadow moved equally as much to the left of the vapour trail and if the sun had moved that fast then i think i would of poo'd my pants!...I have a couple of pics that i took where i live as i have seen this line before, Normally a lot wider and in winter...It looks thiner but it went straight across the sky.

Was thinking of going to Wings & Wheels but then another opportunity came up closer to home. A photo op with the last surviving Hawker Hurricane that flew in the Battle of Britain and is still flying today. After reading your experience i think i made the right choice.

Definitely....Great photo..cloud9
