A couple of Wedge headlamp pod questions ..
Discussion
Hi Peeps.
After going over a bump in the road the other day my O/S headlamp pod started mis-behaving by not retracting once up...I spent 2 hours on Monday removing the pod and cleaning and checking the connections.
Put it back together and the pod wouldn't lift so after removing and replacing the pod 4 times i gave up...I have checked fuses, Relays and for any loose connections or wires...So my question is....
Can the plug be removed with pod installed?...And is there a wire i can test..(Bearing in mind I'm an electrical dimwit still so no live wires please)....that will show i have what i should have....
Im just waiting for the engine to cool so that i can check the earths on the chassis and suspension turret...
Cheers

Hi Zig.
My offside lamp is also intermittent. I usually crouch down, stick a hand through the hole where the manual lifter knob is and "waggle the wires" around, the lamp always lifts. This saves having to take the bulb etc out.
As always, why do a job properly when you can bodge it in a fraction of the time!
Saying that, I cleaned the connectors in the pod recess with electrical cleaner and the problem seems to have disappeared.
Thanks mate... That was my first port of call......My offside lamp is also intermittent. I usually crouch down, stick a hand through the hole where the manual lifter knob is and "waggle the wires" around, the lamp always lifts. This saves having to take the bulb etc out.

Cleaned all connectors with a fine needle file and contact cleaner..Checked wires going into plugs...Checked fuses and swapped the relays around...Still nothing..
I did check the engine earths behind the N/S rocker cover and the little one on the O/S lower wishbone...Is there another?...

Cheers chaps...I actually remembered that i have a motor that someone gave me at the fest for someone...Whoever that was seems to be turning to be me..Strange...
So my plan is to disconnect the plug and two bullet connectors and plug in the other motor..If it works then bingo and if its doesn't then b**l**ks..
So "Bingo" or "B**l**ks"....
I will test the plug if no joy on the other motor...Oh and i have been reminded about the earth where the resistors are on the N/S suspension turret...I couldn't see them as my cold air feed is in the way...

The main earthing point for all the electrics at the front of the car is the left-hand suspension tower, below the airflow meter. There should be about 8 to a dozen ring terminals on an M6 stud.
The earths to the wishbones are irrelevant; they're actually there to earth the suspension to the chassis! The reason being that the Metalastik bushes insulate the suspension from the chassis and the rotation of the wheel bearings can cause static buildup which, in the good ole' days of AM radio, led to a whistling crackle over Jimmy Young [other DJs were available]

I forgot about that earth as my cold air feed that i put in hides it...

Well bit of an update if you can call it that....Removed the pod..Connected up the other motor that i have..Nothing...Mind you I'm not 100% about the spare motor i have...Cleaned up the big bunch of earths on the N/S suspension turret and......Nothing.
Now i don't have N/S headlight...Pod and sidelights works but no headlamp...

Hi Peeps.
Well had a productive day on Poppy, Went to see a good friend who very kindly fitted my new fuel pump and fuel feed...The hose was starting to perish as the fuel was permeating through it..Fairly straight forward...Couple of brown trouser moments when removing the feed to the pump which had armoured hose so was not that easy to clamp..We chose the bolt in hole option but the bolt was too big...
Next the feed to the headlights was tested and it was soon after that Paul spotted the deliberate mistake...I had somehow with all my knowledge and wisdom made a fatal error of plugging the pod motor into the headlamp plug...Its a fairly easy mistake to make ...
So after being laughed at for ten minutes we continued to re-assemble the light pods..
Test.....On = 2 Up...Off = 2 Down........On = 2 Up...Off = 2 Down......On = 2 Up...Off = 2 Down......On = 2 Up...Off = 2 Down......On = 2 Up...Off = 2 Down......Happy days....
After having a brief chat and a farewell handshake i cheekily popped the pods up one more time...On = 2 Up..Off = 1 down..On = 1 up...Off 1 down..On = 1 up...Off 1 down..On = 1 up...Off 1 down..
So the ECU was dropped and suddenly the pod lowered...Ah ha...So the relay board was dropped down and Paul found that the wire on the diode had snapped so he fixed that and still nothing...Little wiggle of the loom and bingo..So somewhere in there is a dodgy wire..The ECU is going to be moved from the flap under the glovebox to the recess in the tub on the left hand side of the passenger footwell....I think thats where they are meant to sit!.
So another day has been set aside to sort out the relay board........I said..."Relay board".......
Thanks

Decided to have another look at why i don't have flash on the driving lamps but do have them as front fogs..Removed the pod to check that the plug is on the right connector...Seems to nearly match colours at each end...Put it back together and now do not have any O/S main beam...Still no flash on driving lamps...On the N/S lamp plug there was 5 wires in total on the loom side..There were two white & Blue striped that went in together...Loom side...Two green & Red or Brown...Loom side.. and one black...Lamp side was one blue & White and one green & red or brown and one black so i take it the N/S pod feeds the O/S?
Ive given up now anyway as its doing my head in...I have never known anyone to have removed and refitted the pods so much on a Wedge in one month!...Ill have another look tomorrow as i have an MOT next month...
Cheers

This might be of use... if you scroll down there's a Powerpoint slideshow on how to strip and rebuild the pod motors:
http://www.wedgeneering.co.uk/TVR%20390SE%20p6.htm
Thanks Ian...Thats a really useful well documented piece of technically correct yet easily explained chunk of info that even i can understand...http://www.wedgeneering.co.uk/TVR%20390SE%20p6.htm
You sir are a generous....(I didn't put "Genius" cos i know how modest you are)
Don't know why i didn't look there in the first place....

Actually after a quick look at the diagram I'm now thinking that the blue/White striped could be the culprit as i didn't touch the O/S lamp or pod yesterday only the N/S was removed and inspected...Thats when i saw the doubled up wires coming from the headlamp plug..(Blue & White...Red & Green etc).. Obviously to feed the other side.
Im sure the 280i was the other way round.
Anyway so the finger could be pointed at the switch...Flasher stalk or relay board.
I do have a dodgy brown (live) going into the relay board that i tried sorting last week...I couldn't remove the female connector from the relay board..Second down in the row of three for the pods/Headlamp...I have done this before and used a normal female small spade connector..Just can't get the bugger out, I know the fittings are barbed but cannot get anything in there to move them.
My pods are all operational its just the bloody lamps!...
This was the wire...
Which is now...Or was held in place...id better check that.
This was after the pods were sorted...All lights work except the flash of the driving lights...

Right well i thought after looking at Ian's wiring diagram for the headlights i thought i would check the diode as this was giving some problems recently...
The wire had snapped and i ran out of small spade fittings ..Anyhow i was able to fix it for now but will need a new one.
So now i have flash but no front fogs...And still no main beam on the O/S bulb which I'm thinking now may of gone.
I had front fogs but no flash with the diode up the other way but i have put it back to the flash as that just seems the right way?.
Im now thinking i may have two issues...
1. A faulty front fog lamp switch...The illumination was out at the last MOT and was advised...I did sort that as that was a wire out..Maybe its this again.
2. A blown main beam bulb.
I have a new headlamp bulb in the boot but was wondering if anyone knows the part number for the diode..If not i will try to read from it.
Thanks

Hi Peeps.
Well fitted a new diode and its still doing the same ole rubbish!..I also fitted a new headlamp bulb but that was doing the same as the old one...Doh!...
Turn the diode one way and i have fogs and high beam on the headlights no flash...Turn it up the other way and i have flash and no fogs...I think there is definitely a break in a wire somewhere...

I think the new diode was 1N0000...Something?...Ill have a look tomorrow at the spare.
At one point i had to give the headlamp a tap to help it come on so there is definitely a loose wire somewhere near the plug go the lamp..
The fog light switch works and illuminates..What should the diode be doing?.
As said up one way i have no flash on driving lamps but do on main beam headlamps also have front fogs and the switch is illuminated?.
...Up the other way i have flash as high beam on headlights and flash on driving lights but no front fogs or illumination on the switch?
Which is correct?.....
So i have everything i should have but in the wrong order?...
