What happened on the A3 yesterday afternoon?

Morning all,
A long shot, but I thought I'd see if anyone knew what happened on the A3 yesterday afternoon?
Coming out of Guildford heading North, we had 2 police cars charge past, lights and sirens on full whack, and sure enough, traffic soon ground to a halt just after the small turnoff for Send & Ripley.
Again, no surprise to discover as we inched forward that there had been a pretty hefty smash on the southbound carriageway - 2 cars on the hard shoulder, lots of debris on both sides of the road - but on our side there were two police dogs about to be released as well as the police helicopter hovering overhead.
Presumably one of the drivers had done a runner, but the speed with which so many police cars reached the area did make me wonder whether they'd already been in pursuit when the crash happened or something?
