Surrey CC are at it again - this time proposing to reduce the A30 speed limit from 50 to 40 between Sunningdale and Bagshot. They also want to reduce the speed in Bagshot itself from 40mph to 30mph for a distance of 1.5km.

The A30 in this area used to be 60mph, which was entirely suitable apart from times when the road was especially busy. But some years ago, the speed limit was dropped to 50. Traffic volumes have since increased to a point where it's often filled with 38mph-everywhere drivers, but at least you can overtake them and make progress. If SurreyCC go ahead with these proposals, it's going to make it impossible to get past these crawling roadblocks legally.

I would urge you all to object to these proposals. The public consultation closes on the 24th May:

Objected. Thanks for the link. As usual I had no idea this was even being proposed.

TX.
I only found out yesterday when I noticed small yellow signs on some of the speed limit poles mentioning speed limit change proposal. And I knew it wasn't going to be an increase!

Done, probably a waste of time though.
Probably. but if it goes through and you didn't lift a finger to object, then you'll feel even more annoyed. Or at least that's how it is for me.

Fairly sure the A31 has already been earmarked / proposed for a consistent 50 stretch all the way from the A331 junction through Farnham and a distance beyond with average speed cam enforcement.

Oh god, you have got to be kidding??? Any links to this news? This would be unbearable.
I couldn't find the original link but found this one covering the direct Farnham bypass area part of the consultation (from the same website in the OP) from a couple of months back.

On a side note, i also found this courtesy of a Google search of the above, which covers other plans for Farnham including 20mph limits in some centre & residential areas, other speed reduction consultations in the future for safety and environmental concerns, but at least they're finally sorting out the roundabout near Sainsbury's.

This fking country. Are we really seeing hundreds and hundreds of deaths on all of these roads every single day that means we have no choice but to turn the entire road network into a procession of 50 mph average speed zombies?!
It really doesn't feel too long until it's 20mph in every single place that can even see a house, and everywhere else is 50mph average speed and enjoyment from driving is simply a story we tell our grandchildren.
I feel exactly the same. If only there was a motorists lobby that wasn't as invisible as the ABD. I get the impression that it's practically a one-man operation. I wish we had a much more French attitude to silly speed limits and the proliferation of cameras and we actually protested against them rather than meekly grumbling about them on internet forums. I make sure to tell my county councillors that I will be actively voting against anyone who proposes or endorses more restrictions on motorists. I have no issues with low speed limits outside schools or in tight residential areas when there are likely to be children present, but blanket 20mph zones "to encourage walking and cycling" are not what people want. If our journeys are easily walkable or cyclable, then I will walk or cycle. But if I need to move heavy or bulky items or I'm going to play golf or go shooting, then those things can't be done via walking, cycling or public transport.

It doesn't end there. My neighbourhood forum and Runnymede BC where I live are looking to bring in 20MPH limits, road narrowing and dedicated cycle paths in the Runnymede area and some of this will affect the A30 down to the Maranello roundabout at Egham.

There's a referendum and all residences have been leafletted to encourage residents to vote YES to the plans on Wednesday, despite many residences not being informed that there's a neighbourhood forum and not having a chance to object to the plans at an earlier stage.

If you live in Runnymede and have the opportunity to vote, I would encourage you to go to your polling station on Wednesday 13th December and vote NO.

Sigh. Whenever pressed the council say that the speed limit reductions are for road safety purposes and that they have the full support of the police. But the only driver I've ever met who is in favour of speed limit reductions is a friend who is an absolute menace behind the wheel, constantly swerving about because she's messing with her phone or distracted by her dog. She has to take her car for bodywork repairs on an annual basis, and her car constantly has scrapes and bits of trim hanging off. I feel sorry for her poor Lexus and her long-suffering husband!

I attempted to go from Virginia Water to the other side of Camberley yesterday and there were long queues on the A30 getting into and out of Camberley - all due to a lane closure and temporary traffic lights. There was some sort of digger on view with a flashing amber light on top, but no workmen anywhere to be seen... I ended up taking the M3 back to Bagshot which was much faster despite also having lane closures in place.

While on the M3 I saw a car with the registration OO20 CAT. I thought Os were not allowed in number plates due to potential confusion with zeroes. The Os looked exactly the same as the 0. What gives?

I didn't even notice that the A30 was 30mph through Bagshot (must not call it shagbot) - has the limit been signposted yet?
