Off road hoon, anyone?
Discussion
Evening All,
Having picked up my new beastie - a '99 LWB Shogun 3.0 V6 - yesterday evening, I took the family out this afternoon to help me get it muddy down Wolvern's Lane on Leith Hill near Dorking.
What a laugh!!! Who would've thought you could have so much fun with an internal combustion engine below 10mph! It's not even on proper tyres for taking it off road, but handled mud, standing water and traversing angles of 20 degrees as though it was happily trundling down the A3! Low ratios and lockable diffs make for a lot of fun!
Does anyone else in the area have anything similar lurking in their garage? Want to come out some time and get muddy? Nigel - want to get a brand new X5 off the nice folk at BMW? I've found a couple of places in Sussex which have planned routes graded for difficulty, marshals and the like which are open a couple of Sundays every month from 10-4. Drive as much as you want for £26.

Excellent!
One of the places I've been looking at is the owners' days run by John Morgan
Pictures of what they get up to!
Unfortunately I can't do next weekend. The February date might be possible, depending on when the baby arrives, or alternatively one of the days in March should be good.

I'm deff interested, mind you I have one of those SUV things so should be interesting....
They have graded trails, so we should be able to find something that we can all take a go at. White is for beginners with road tyres, red for experienced drivers with mud tyres, and black for experts with full roll cage and crash helmets! Altrezia said:
This is turning out to be a great Idea, Kermit!
Mine has road tyres too, but I don't mind getting stuck, as long as one of you lot can yank me out
I wouldn't worry too much about the road tyres, unless you mean 20" chrome wheels with low profile tyres!Mine has road tyres too, but I don't mind getting stuck, as long as one of you lot can yank me out
Mine is fitted with road tyres (as far as I can tell) and I am 100% convinced that my nerve would've failed me long before my tyres based on my initial experience yesterday.

In all honesty, if anyone is thinking of taking some very precious metal, best go along with someone first to get a feel for it and to trythe lanes out.
Not talking so much about ability of the car, more that there's a good chance things will get scratched. Even if a lane is wide enough, you can't guarantee that a rut won't slide you into a bush.
Thinking of sliding, it could be too wet to go laning in convoy at the moment.
The last week or so will mean the ground is pretty saturated and we'd probably end up damaging the surface with 4 or 5 two tonne vehicles. It just gives the lentilists more ammo.
A fresh spring morning after a dry spell is ideal for green laning.
Some very valid points. At 9 years / 144k miles, I'm not fussed about anything a bush can do to mine. Not talking so much about ability of the car, more that there's a good chance things will get scratched. Even if a lane is wide enough, you can't guarantee that a rut won't slide you into a bush.

As for the green lanes wear issue, that was one of the reasons I was suggesting we go to a specific off road centre. Much as I enjoyed my little trundles down Wolvens Lane yesterday, I'm also a mountain biker, so I can just as easily summon up frustration when I come across too much mud!
ETA: Nice website you have there!

Not done any pay and plays yet. There's one just outside reading - http://www.4x4-withoutaclub.co.uk/
which gets some good comments from people I've talked to.
I reckon they'd be good fun, although I'm sure I'd get there, have a play, and convince myself I need more mods
I'm a member of that club, and the course is 5 mins from my house. I can offer coffee's to anyone who wants to come and have a go there!which gets some good comments from people I've talked to.

Right then folks - How about http://www.4x4-withoutaclub.co.uk on the 9th of March?
Stick your names down here, and I'll give them a call to see if we need to do an advance booking.

Actually - Salisbury Plain is a good place to take any half decent 4x4...
On a nice day, you get some great views and get to see some interesting sights...
With Guided Weapons (Bulford side) and Artillery (Larkhill area) experience I see this as a good outing. A couple of strops/ropes between us and we could have the real off-road equivalent of a hoon as opposed to a run round a wood. Sorry I've never been to the Reading off-road playground, but I have been to Salisbury Plain and when you're not working ( ) it's got some lovely views, stunning terrain and some challenging tracks. On a nice day, you get some great views and get to see some interesting sights...
Look everyone! We've got an off road forum now! - http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/forum.asp?h=0&a...
Cheers Guys!

Congrats
It's never too soon to start getting them into cars. Belt in a baby recaro and bring him along too. He'll love it
I took my 2yr old down a green lane near me today. One second he's squawking about the horses and sheep, then next, he's absolutely fast asleep, despite the fact that he's being slammed from side to side in his chair! Very definitely still on!
I've been dealing with a double shocker recently. New baby has arrived, and I'm also actually having to work for my salary for the first time in 7 months, so I hadn't got round to formalising a list.
I suggest we start one right here and now!

When is this? And anyone have room for a passenger?
March 9th, AKA a week on Sunday.I've already got Morebeanz riding shotgun I think, but given that the nature of the event means we're not going to be overloaded with single seaters, I should imagine someone can oblige! Just need to get everyone who originally expressed an interest back looking at the thread and confirming their attendance.
Right then chaps!
Just to confirm, this Sunday is still very much on. The venue opens its gates at 8am, with driving starting from 9, and running until 4 - or possibly 5 if it's still light enough.
Personally, I'm aiming to get there for around 10 - Morebeanz, I'll be over to pick you up around 9 - and given the utterly unacceptable misuse of apostrophes on the site burger van...
... I suggest we shun it and pop out for a nice pub lunch part way through the day. If anyone knows any decent hostelries in the general Aldermaston area, please let us know.
I'll be easy to spot, from behind at least, as I've just finished applying a large PH vinyl smiley to my spare wheel cover. You're looking for a green S reg LWB shogun.
For those who are coming, I suggest you bring your driving licences in case they are required. If you can PM me your mobile numbers, I'll send you mine back as well.
For those who are there by 10, why don't we find each other in the carpark. I'm sure we'll be back through there at various points through the day as well, so we can find stragglers too!
