Hello

I had some spare time recently and wrote an Android Rovergauge.

I used the open source libcomm14cux library as a reference.

I'm more or less complete and have a few minor bits to finish off.

Kind regards

How does the hardware interface between the Android device and the ECU?
I used the beautifully made Rover V8 14CUX interface cable off the PH classifieds and a USB OTG cable
So, if you already have Rovergauge running on your laptop and wanted to use the android version you would just need the OTG cable.

Very interested in this as I have roverguage but never loaded it on my flakey laptop, but have a nice Android tablet and otg cable already.
Flaky laptops don't help, especially when you're on the road or not at home.

Having all the diagnostic info and being able to use your phone to quickly and simply check over everything before you start the car (of if you're stuck in traffic) is really handy.

The app has a few other features as well like:
-o- A GPS speedometer with acceleration and lateral-G meters
-o- Full custom dial layouts that can be saved and shared
-o- The ability to remember the max and min dial values (i.e. on the water temp dial)
-o- Full HUD mode
-o- Data logging
and a few more here and there..

I'm going to call it: RS-RV8

Kind regards

Will you be doing this as freeware, like Dan and Colin have done?
I have given it a lot of thought, especially in the last two weeks, and haven't decided yet.

ok.. Fuel Maps done, just need to finish off the 16x8 FuelMapGrid widget to nicely display and colour the Fuel Map.

I also added a Screen to display all the GPS stats as well:

When I say a lot, maybe 400 including smartwatches (nice way to present faults during driving).
Wow! I'd love to do a smart watch extension - maybe a fault code or coolant temp alarm? smile

Drop me a DM. I have some pre-release hardware that will excite you.
Hi Alex, I tried to send you a PM but keep getting an error.. (either that or I've sent you around 10 PM's!)
Let me know if you have received anything?
Best wishes

Cool.
I would be interested in this as I have the Roverguage cable + software. But having the laptop in the car ocasionaly is OK but to have this on a Android smart phone, well you could check the staus of the engine etc.. at any time thumbup from me.
Thanks 667Fox,

Checking every sensor that feeds the ecu from an Android smart phone makes it so much easier to spot faults.

Probably even easier with a smart watch I guess?

Ok, all the boilerplate code is done.

I have some testing to do and possibly some smart watch extensions before it's ready.

In the meantime I added a nice Driving Layout, showing every engine sensor, that you can glance at [when stopped and in neutral and with the handbrake on of course smile]

Just pure, on-screen, analogue, realtime sensor feedback to complement the noise and feel smile

This is looking very nice but I have a very small observation.
It would perhaps be better with RPM as the main gauge with road speed of to the side somewhere. Reason is that on a TVR the 14CUX only sees a simulated speed (from memory 0 or 55mph) so the ECU knows simply if the car is moving or not. It uses this info to set the idle speed.

If you now say the speed is GPS based then is there somewhere, I have not spotted, an indication of the speed signal the ECU is seeing as this is quite important in diagnosing certain faults.

Steve
Hi Steve

Good points there.

The layout of dials and gauges is completely freeform – i.e. you can move and resize (and add or delete) the dials yourself and create a custom layout. Which you can save and share with others (the layout file will have a “.rs-rv8” extension).

So if you would like to swap the RPM and MPH gauge positions you can.. Or if you would like to create a totally new layout, with your personal preferences, you can as well – there is a “Reset Layout” menu option in case you make a mistake and want to return to default. Plus, as long as you save your custom layout you can easily switch between them.

There is a GPS speedometer and an ECU Speedometer – I will add a “GPS” or “ECU” label to the dial so that you can tell the difference (oops!)

HTH!
