I've been looking for some decent 305/40/22 tyres for my Merc GL420, and came across these:

http://www.mytyres.co.uk/cgi-bin/rshop.pl?dsco=110...

Normally I'd avoid anything from a relatively unknown brand like Landsail, but on paper they seem to be by far the best tyre available in this fitment! All season, 71db, B wet weather rating.

Does anyone have any experience with these? I can't find any other tyres that come close at any price.

Pretty sure that the performance ratings are under a self-cert system by the manufacturers are they not?

Therefore I would treat any good ratings for a cheap ste brand like Landsail with a huge degree of caution.
If that is true then it throws my whole shortlisting process out of the window frown

There are very few cars running on 22" wheels it seems, so it's hard to find relevant reviews. The characteristics of a 19" tyre can be quite different to a 22" - especially in noise, which is one of my top priorities (aside from grip obviously).

Just looked at the link - Nankangs are cheaper and Nexens are only a tenner more.

At the budget end of the market, I have no issue with either brand and would trust them a lot more than I'd trust Landsail.
The Nankangs do seem like a possible alternative, and I have heard of them before which is a bonus (although I thought that they too were Chinese?)

I'm not even really looking for budget tyres, just the best without paying solely for the name - and something quiet.

For reference the car currently has these pieces of poo on there:

Previous owner fitted them and I want them off ASAP.

The Nankang SP7 is decent enough for a budget tyre.

I can't help but feel you'd be better off fitting some smaller wheels, though. hehe
Naaaaaah, this beast was made for 22's smile

Hankook are available in your size

Hankook are OEM tyres on quite a few new cars. They certainly aren't cheap and nasty.
+1 hankook another good shout
I'd go for those in a shot, but their wet weather performance is rated E, which has got to be pretty poor especially if the posts above about the EU markings being self-assigned is true.

Yeah Hankooks are probably going to be much worse than Landsails...

Seriously, the ratings are bks- look for independent tyre tests
I was actually going to retract my previous post but you beat me to it. After checking some reviews of the Hankooks they seem a pretty decent tyre. We may have a winner providing there aren't any other contenders.

yes OP I've had a quick look and at the prices you're willing to pay you're only ever going to get st tyres- so if you want good tyres in your budget, change the wheels for smaller ones.
I'm not on a budget - people seem to be assuming that I am because the tyre with the best rating happens to be one of the cheaper ones. I'll happily pay £500 a corner if someone can show me an efficient tyre with great wet performance and low noise output.

As for OEM size, they are genuine Merc wheels but not the ones that came with the car from factory. I looked at 295/40/22 and got even less results. I don't know what issues I'd have (if any) going up to 45

Then it's a no-brainer. The Contis.
Is that a response based on experience with that particular model, test results or just the name though? I've seen plenty of lesser known tyres whip the ass off brand names - purely because they are trying to make a name for themselves and undercutting the big guys.
