Water marks on chrome trim

Does anybody have any tips to firstly get rid of an then, secondly, protect against future occurrences of those annoying white circles which appear on chrome trim around windows? Would something like brass-o work, or would it be too harsh? Would a Rain-X keep the spos away and keep the shine?

I think it's plastic chrome - it feels like it. It's on the trim around the windows on a 2005 Audi A4, if anybody knows for sure?
