Stone chip touchup

Hi all,

I'm trying to tackle paint chips mostly on my bonnet and front bumper unsurprisingly. However i find the paint forms a dome and isn't flush with the old paint, Its hard not to use too much with the paint pen i have. I'm a bit worried about sanding down as how do you not scratch the areas surrounding the new paint? I tried this on one chip and the surrounding area became lighter in colour and scratched, polishing it has made it better but i can still slightly see a discolouration so now i'm reluctant to sand all the other chips i have put a blob of new paint over! Right now the blobs of paint are probably more apparent than the chips in the first place. The sensible thing to have done was to try one chip and see how it turns out. Anyone got any words of advice. I suppose if it looks really bad i could get the bonnet resprayed at a cost.

actually its either a fine brush or a metal nip that you use. I've mostly used the nip which squeezes out the paint as a tiny sphere but this then forms a raised blop, perhaps i should have smudged with my finger to make it flat at least while it was wet. My issue is more with the sanding and polishing and how do you know you're not taking off good paint and creating sanding scratches that you won't get back through polishing..

I may see what the garage will charge to do it all but my fear is it could be a lot as its pretty time consuming!
