Or similar???
Hopefully selling my Mazda and looking at these for the extra carrying capacity as a single do everything car, fast comfortable, modern (compared to 2000 mx-5), quite cool looking, V8 power!

I test drove one and liked it but at 33k was a bit out of my price range. I am now looking at SSVs of the 2007/8 vintage for about $20-25k? May look at tweaking power up toward 400bhp as well.....

Any thoughts?

What about the clutch on the manuals? A problem area? Sticking or squeaking or something? Made of chocolate?

I tried a coil overed SSV with black mags a while ago which was pretty nice. Not much to tell, the forums don't give much as things to watch out for?!

I am going to look at a black SSV 2007 100k kms, aiming to pay between 20-22k, tow hitch that's unused (I want one) leather dual climate, black, standard. What can go wrong?! :/

I think these come with 270kw and without the AFM stuff they are easier to mod? I would be looking at an intake, potentially exhaust, then brakes, then headers and a light ECU tune....leaving the MAF as part of the equation, no cams.

Thoughts?

What year are those? I doubt they are in my budget. I had a quick look at my budget. Does nothing for me. I like a more aggressive look. They might be technically a better engine but dunno...doesn't float my boat.

Yeah one at 22 one at 27.9.

Will check subframe, suppose just look under front bumper bar and slam plate under bonnet? Will check general condition, will ask about gearbox/clutch but doubt they'll know as owned it a year and a half.

Major service entails what? I just did 100,000kms service on MX-5 with waterpump, belt, pulleys, cam seals...whats involved in a L98 major service? Its a non-servicable timing chain isn't it? Oil and plugs no worries.

Seems like there really is not a lot to look at on these.

Also I had a Classic Subaru Impreza WRX STI in the uk....so I am not new to the dangers of modding! I just know when to stop!

I cannot see any downsides other than the depreciation is there on these...don't think I will escape that as I did on the MX-5!

Wow thanks Mister!

Big question - What does teh infotainment system on the series one do? How is it different to the series 2?

Does it have bluetooth / Ipod and all that jazz? Satnav built in?

So what about power realted mods? Anyone done any? I read that a VCM intake can unleash as much as 30kw at the wheel?? That seems like a lot for an intake only?

Very pleased so far!

Paid what I think is a fair price and the car is remarkably good condition. Went with a higher miler due to condition than a lower more expensive car.

The guy had it detailed but obviously not by the best company out there as the whole thing in and out was just covered in silicon which I hate. If its cleaned and waxed properly it doesn't need silicon and you are supposed to wipe off the residue after being sprayed! ARGH! wink

Longest week ever! Just want to DRIVE the thing now!

Have had a chance to look about at modding though....seems like an OTR and tune will cost about $1300 and yield about 30kw / 40bhp which is pretty good. More with an exhaust. Also looks like OzTrack do a tune mailorder with a logging device to follow up and tweak the map however looks like hte map is just a rip from a higher model to start with so the price is quite cheeky.

Secondly for my series 1 looks like its pretty simple with a bit of DIY modding that I can connect my iPod or video device to the front screen for playback for a few pennies, though typically a compant wants $100 for a cable I can make for tuppence (after a lot of digging) but if I want to playback video at anything over 4mph I need to spend $200 (!) for someone to reflash the EEPROM once to remove the Video In Motion blocker....now thats money for old rope and it doesn't look lie there is an alternative...

Currently contemplating a Raspberry Pi install....

No sadly not. Buy all the gear to reprogamme the radio yourself with lots of reading/time etc or pay someone to take apart your car and do it for a bit less (no appeal for me there either) or pay more and get a 5 second plug in cable to do it automatically - Easiest but most expensive.

I may just see if I use it at all first. Got the bits to make an AV in cable for a few bucks, going to link up my PSP and see if it works then maybe think about a Pi.

I wanted something that was flexible - ie not just iphone. My DIY cable will be RCA cables and an extra USB port hidden away. I need to jail break my iPhone to get it to play anything other than movies / youtube...ie satnav.

What's screen mirroring? As in what's on your iPod? (like the home screen?)

I gather you just jailbreak your iPhone and it works. Its a copyright thing I believe.

Then you need to jailbreak your iPhone and I think its easy from there. Its an outpout thing from the phone rather than an intake thing from the car.

So if you have an iPhone it will link up for calls straight away. The front aux is rubbish. No bass, sounds terrible.

I hacked into the rear aux with some home made cables to avoid the super expensive options made by jhp. It now has AV in and phono white/red in and an extra USB/cigarette power point. It all hangs down neatly into a cubby under the radio, barely noticable.

I have an ipod cable which plugs into these including power. It's not a beautiful solution...i'll take a picture. But it works. You can change volume and pause/play from the steering wheel controls - you cannot change track. So if you have a playlist great. If you are stuck on a dodgy song bad luck! But the sound quality is perfect (as it can be). Its flexible in that i have hd my PSP plugged in so at stand still I can watch video too. The cables were cheap to make, not very hard if you can use a soldering iron and the trim on these cars is all on nice clips that don't seem to break / fly off.

Some of the SS don't have the infotainment screen. I think all of them have a rear aux though...but I don't have knowledge of them.

412 bhp straight out of the box though! Nice!

I need to get tuning mine now......intake and exhaust will get me something close to that...grrrr! MORE POWAHHHH!

Bibbs - Get out and about this weekend? How did you go?

Weekend after next I am going to a family friends for the weekend and another guys is bring his heavily tuned (he went Cams) Ute version of my car...so it will be good to have a chat and gain from his experience...might even get to drive it to feel the difference that some $$$ will make. I think he has done headers, Cats, cams, exhaust intake and a tune and he gets about 460hp but I don't know exactly what model he has...I imagine that's flywheel figure as well...

Still, will be interesting....I'd probably stop short of cam, instead invest in some Brembos from the Redline model. I guess the benefit of the GTS is you get all of that already!

I just want a smooth idle and no low rev issues. So for me, Exhaust F2B and intake/tune will be the limit. That should get me somewhere north of 400bhp, which I think will be fine as I don't want to have to be replacing clutches and suffering rough idle...spending a fortune. I am not that bored with the power I have yet and the noise if muted is still nice. I'll take my time getting there I think.

But will be good to see the difference. An extra 50hp for you should be easy as intake and tune.
