what do you mean "here", its a small world and all but i think "West Midlands" might be stretching it a little smile

i will do a build diary once i actually have some direction and progress.

Trying to get the body out of the mould and then see how it looks. From there it will be build a chassis and see how that goes. One step at a time. Just doing it for fun. Looking forward to the day my boys can get out there and help me.

those are the first 3 bodies out of the molds, been a bit of a process/saga to get this far really. There are 10 of us that have bought the molds together, so we were hoping to get 10 bodies out of the molds before they become redundant to our immediate needs or fell apart.

since we started one of the guys has managed to pick up another body second hand, so we now only need to get 9 out....
body 4 is in production at the moment
mine will be body 5, so I will get a build diary going in either the kit car section or readers rides once that arrives.

body 1 is now in Harvey Bay
body 2 is just north of Brisbane
body 3 is on its way to Orange
body 4 will leave for Wagga Wagga once it pops out
body 5 being mine will get built here in Melbourne.

I must be stupid, or have rocks in my head trying to build one of these from scratch.
Defiantly easier to buy a kit.

In the last week of June last year some molds/chassis jig turned up on ebay, 10 of us group bid on them and won.

I'm the only one in the group in Melbourne so i picked up the lot as the bits were down here.
We then approached all the fibre-glasses we could find for quotes. they then suggested that we would need to have the front and rear clips attached to Rotisseries, so I knocked up two (F & R) for the clips.

there was then some bits missing out of the molds namely 2 Door handle recesses, 4 "Hartwell" latch recesses, 2 fuel filler cap recesses and the 2 upper air intake ducts. These were fabricated and added to the molds so that all features were present post layup. This was complete by mid November. Body construction/layup then progressed.

as we are not a commercial company and don't have a set time frame for delivery on the parts the fibre glasses fit us in around there other paying clients. Keeps them busy with turnover and price reasonable for us.

The fibre-glasses have been excellent to work with thus far and have informed me that they have started on body 5 - mine - at the start of the week, so thus far i have the rear bulkhead that keeps the rear clips shape.

we are not looking to go in to production with a full kit. the current guys in the market place all do a great job. (RF, DRB and Pace) Being in Melbourne I have seen the RF stuff first hand over a number of years and it is steadily improving. it has always been an excellent kit that is very comprehensive. expensive, don't think so - there resale values hold up well!
I put some photos of the RF up in Hoonigans build thread
http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

last time I was at RF (June last year) they had the first part of the MKIV - a roof on hand, and it looked great. cant wait to see it finished.

Well, for reference this is the current RF demonstrator
http://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/Ford-GT...

The cheapest 1 on car sales was around $100k

I have the RF price list from June last year and would agree with that you could easily spend $120k au.

The RF probably sets the upper end of the market for replicas using non mono chassis.
There are cheaper options. I know that there is potentially a few sets of molds in Melbourne but you will be going it alone on many of the parts. Having said that, they are no different in construction concept than your typical locust 7.

The hard bit is getting the period details correct. This is where a group build may have an advantage as we can tool up for the stuff we need, like the door handles.

I hope to get my body in a week or two.

Ill post what I can. I'm very mindful about putting to much stuff out in public, just not sure how "clicky" the GT40 scene is here. As we are NOT manufacturers and don't want to ps off the other guys that are (manufacturing/in business) - our group of ten does approximately 99% of our communication off forums, essentially in private messages........

Im sure you can understand and read between the lines.

Now, anyone know anything about making a carbon chassis?

Haha, certain manufacturers are ridiculous, refusing to sell to you if you bought a kit from another company (even when the extras could actually add up to more than the price of a kit in the first place). Others will bend over backwards to help you out no matter who you got your chassis/bodywork from.

We've got a private email list for myself and the guys making ours from "our" manufacturer.
That's exactly what I was hinting at....our group is not the only ones out there with essentially private communications channels running.
it was part of the reason for posting this thread in the first place.

there is possibly 20 to 30 GT40 cars being built in Australia at the moment, you just don't here about it because the owners do not post on public forums.

just reaching out trying to make contact, locating those that are prepared to work with me, not against me.

To the public GT40 manufactures - my moneys good when i'm ready to go.
I am particular about "exactly" what I want. If feel I can design and build it my self, to my exact specification and I haven't called/emailed about your product its probably not exactly what I want being deficient against my requirements in some manner, or I don't know what you have!

this applies particularly when it comes to the chassis most are offering for a GT40 and is not a reflection against the rest of your product.

anyway, back to the day job.

John sent me some photos of body 3 sitting on a chassis that came out of the jig we have. Note that the body is untrimed and straight out of the mold and is just resting in place to check if there is any show stoppers with the jig/chassis dimensions....

I have sent a few emails of to the VASS Engineer. Will see what he has to say and then i can work out the way forward. I would like to get this on full rego initially and get it on the National Vin Number register so that if I have to move it interstate I can. once that is done it would be nice if I can get it on the club permit scheme as $130 - $160 per year for reg is better than $800 and i think that 90 days use will be sufficient for me.

what i need to sort out next is the Wheels and suspension uprights/knuckles/spindles.

i got some lightly abused rear tyres from Stuckies the other month which will help with design and setup dimensions

These were obviously taken pre painting the floor. got one of thoes DyMark kits and it is fantastic now. wish I had of done it sooner.
