Moving to Brisbane, and I'm on a defacto visa as the other half is a nurse and has an oz passport from working previously

It's already been a couple of years in the making, have been a couple of times before was in Brisbane for 5 weeks Feb /March this year on a holiday /scouting tour .

Nope lol, any advice would be good I did look into it good while back on this forum, general quotes are in the 850-1100 sterling to ship to brisbane then of course the nice extras the government will charge and there quite a few by the looks of it, plus mine is modified not extremely but a bit from standard

You do it online, having to prove 12 months continuous use, to stop people buying a car and then shipping it as a personal import. You have to scan and upload as many supporting documents as you can. V5, proof of purchase etc... I believe you can have one personal import per person for up to 6 months once arriving or similar??

The missus drove the Caterham and I drove a luton van to Southampton docks, where we unloaded all items ready for them to put them in a 20' container. This happened late October and we got the car and the belongings delivered to us in Coffs Harbour mid January.

The car needs to be clean, otherwise they will charge you for cleaning. They hit me slightly, but it wasn't too bad. The car was fresh from rebuild so wasn't dirty as such. It was driven to the docks, and fresh from a paint job, so the dreadful painting company had also left a bit of a mess.

My car was then registered in Queensland (Brisbane) as a personal import and it received its new VIN number, but it was then shipped down to me for the compliance and blue slip.

Thanks very much for that I've read the thread on here about imports over a year ago and it still confuses me lol, 1st hand info is always best. I'll look into it again

Before you bring it out I'd suggest you check to see if the mods are legal here - it will need to have a compliance plate fitted when it gets here and they'll not do it if it isn't legal. For example, it looks to me like it could be too low. You don't want to get it here and then find out you need to fit the original suspension to get it legal because unless you've brought it with you finding some here could be a) difficult and b) expensive.


ETA check here https://www.ppq.com.au/ looks as if your current number is available in Qld, so you could even keep the "same" plate if you want.

Yes the mods have been bothering me, the suspension I can raise and remove the splitter, i have to fit a 200 cell cat, the engine is forged and a big intercooler and air filter, also porky 993 brakes, all legal and roadworthy here but hard to get definitive answers.

According to the National Code of Practice for Light Vehicle Construction and Modification on the last link (click the pdf links):

Suspension will be a no go unless it has more than 100mm clearance:

All other motor vehicles with more than 3 wheels must have a ground clearance of:
- at least 100mm at any point within 1 metre of an axle; and
- at least one-thirtieth of the distance between the centres of adjacent axles at the
midpoint between them (refer Figure LS1); and
- at any other point — at least the distance that allows the vehicle to pass over a peak in
the road with a gradient on either side of 1:15, if the wheels of 1 axle of the vehicle are
on the slope on one side of the peak and the wheels of the next axle are on the slope
on the other side.


and the brakes will require a mod plate. Of course, they might not notice unless they say Porsche on them, in which case I wouldn't chance it

1.2 MODIFICATIONS REQUIRING CERTIFICATION UNDER LG CODES
The following modifications may be performed under LG Codes:
- Fitting disc or drum brakes that are not a manufacturer’s option;
- Substituting brake master cylinders, wheel cylinders or calipers;
- Fitting or modifying brake balance and pressure limiting devices; and
- Relocating the brake pedal position for left hand or right hand drive.
The principal design installation and fabrication requirements for all of the above modifications
are contained in sub-section 2 General Requirements.


Hope that helps.

Your car will need to undergo compliance anyway, so you could probably find someone who could do that and certify the mods as well. Volvo specialist might be the way to go if you can find one.
