Registration number question

I have a 1956 vehicle, as such it has a 6 digit (three number/three letter) plate. My question is, if I transfer that number onto another vehicle, would I be issued with another 6 digit for the original car?

I was fancying a fleet of matching numbers on my cars, but if I can only get one off the truck, it can stay as it is.
