Been thinking about doing the classic monte for a while now, been reading today that people starting to do it in golf gti's presumably Mk1's

So ben thinking seriously about doing it this year, does anyone know the cut off age for a car to be old enough to do this ?

Anyone done it ?

Any info greatly appreciated

Thanks

Unlike a lot of rallies the Monte has a specific list of cars. As mentioned above they're the ones entered in events up to and including the 1980.

This list has ZERO flexibility. If it says a XYZ V6 13 valve car then that's the one, another model is strictly verboten.

The list of qualifying cars can be found here:

The 'cheapest' way in would be an MGB, Mk1 Golf GTI, various Peugeots and some old Volvos.

When I say 'cheapest' factor in buying the car plus about £10k to properly prep it, 5k to do the rally and another 5k contingency. Plus cash to run team/spares at the various timing points and night stops.

Competitive teams will have a support crew follow them.
That's cool, so far best plan is :

Mgb
Porsche 914 or 924 turbo
Golf gti

The team / spares bit will be the challenge

I think I will pass on the trabby !!!

Finding a car that has already done it and is prepped for it has to be the best idea.

Managed to find an MGB that had done it and was prepped ( needs a bit of refreshing) but both me and my other half are quite tall and it was quite cramped, it is probably the best place to start however !!

Don't have to have a porsche, had loads of 911's in the past but not hell bent on one.

Last rally I did was in my old rs 2.7 lightweight, pre restoration !!

Unfortunately I have just had my plans dashed completely as I won't be able to renew my msa licence.

Long story !!

Bugger bugger bugger !

Really appreciate the advice though

Thanks

That's a shame Phib, sounds like my advice was superfluous anyway as you have done some events already.
Bear in mind though, you don't need a competition licence to do lots of the type of event I pointed out, particularly the HERO stuff. They are closed to club, so below the minimum Nat b licence level.
Now that has made my morning !!! The power of pistonheads

I need to look closer at these i.e. ones you can do without a licence as mine has certainly been revoked on medical grounds.

Have normal driving licence which is not in a any question had it back a year

Back to the classifieds .......

Thanks
