How do you remove protective wax from chromework?

Hi All,

Just bought a 1972 Beetle & all of the bumpers & wheels are covered in a protective wax. Its like a brown sticky substance. Its obviously been done as protection as the chrome underneath is mint. Whats the easiest way to remove the stuff? I was thinking of white spirit or brake cleaner.

Any advice greatly appreciated
