The pain of selling
Discussion
After much deliberation I have decided to part company with my old Vauxhall and vintage caravan. Advertised both and the car, not a sniff. The caravan has had some interest, buyer made offer but it was not enough to have me go through with the sale.
Since then the past few weeks not a single bit of interest. Both up on car and classic and thinking maybe auction. Comments / experiences sought. Thanks.

The market has slowed a little, although I find July/August queitest months for selling...ebay auction?Since then the past few weeks not a single bit of interest. Both up on car and classic and thinking maybe auction. Comments / experiences sought. Thanks.
With anything rare finding a buyer can take a while, unless it's "fire-sale" cheap; with run-of-the-mill stuff it's easier to see what things generally sell for. Sadly many buyers have a huge sense of entitlement and always expect a bargain; even when stuff is priced reasonably cheaply you'll still get offers of 50% or less of the asking price. I hate selling as I hate dealing with people, I have used ebay classified ads in the past to get interest, but even then after accepting offers have had people try to negotiate downwards afterwards.
Thanks for comments, duly noted. The caravan is impossible to value being pre 1930 but in great condition. Vauxhall 20/60 saloon of 1928 vintage again in good condition. Priced at 10k and 20k any cheaper and I may as well raffle them
Seen replacement vehicle but other half tells me sell before buy. Snot fair

An old Vauxhall Cavalier and a 1980's caravan? They seem to be described as "vintage" nowadays.THEN:

Why didn't you give us that information in the first place? You would have got a whole different set of answers. That combo needs careful, professional marketing, maybe contact an auction house for advice? Do a bit of homework, and market it as a very desirable item.

It took me several months to sell my late fathers Singer Le Mans on car and classic. Lots of time wasters and people who couldn't fit in it! Eventually went to a very nice gentleman in Suffolk.
Quick change of subject, but where did you get your stainless exhaust made Cranky?
Hi Mr Eccles, SCA Performance centre in Norwich manufactured and fitted the system for me. Original manifold used but the rest is S/S. I think my Vauxhall was the oldest car in the workshop at the time Quick change of subject, but where did you get your stainless exhaust made Cranky?

Yubba Dubba Do, I think. My Vauxhall has now been sold, or at least I have a deposit from a buyer. My vintage caravan has a buyer from Germany from whom I am expecting his deposit this week.
Now I can have a serious look around for replacement fun. Noticed that interesting cars and campers are snapped up by dealers who then put on massive margins for profit and let the car or camper sit on the forecourt for years in some cases.
The vehicle I am interested in is not an easy purchase, the owner, it would appear is building up a group of interested buyers which I expect he hopes will create a bidding war without the need of auction in its true sense. As its a fairly rare and, in my eyes, a desirable vehicle it seems he has the upper hand.

The market for pre-war stuff is pretty slow at the best of times but I think demographics are kicking in. Few young people want to own something so old and the rest of us are dying out.
Tend to agree, going to the steam rallies and car shows and note a distinct lack of true vintage iron and a strong line up of classics.Gassing Station | Classic Cars and Yesterday's Heroes | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
