I quite fancy a 3200, but I'm a bit wary - recently there was one laid up at my local MOT place for a couple of months while a "lighting controller" was sourced to get it through the test - though to be fair I'm not sure whether the delay was sourcing the part or saving up the several hundred pounds to pay for it. There's a convertible in "left to die" that's fairly local as well, makes me wonder why it's there getting greener and greener.
My mate has a Biturbo which I think that Shamal is a derivation from, and while the Biturbo isn't a remarkable-looking car I think it does look a bit better, in the same way that eighties body-kitted cars looked great until they pushed it a little too far, then the standard un-kitted car started to look good again.

love the shamal....like everything else classic & 'modern classic' prices have sky rocketed. A good one was £40K 4 years ago....couldnt afford one then either.
thought i'd scratch the itch with a manual 3200GT but eventually put off by the possible running costs even with with The Maserati Shed down the road from me for servicing.

I can't see 3200s heading that way. Numbers aside, they offer a completely different driving experience, the 3200GT is a much more modern and sanitised car in comparison to the Maseratis of the 90s. I love that car, although the bottoming out sounds like it could be an expensive trait.

I'm not lucky enough to have driven a Shamal, but both my Ghibli and the Quattroporte of the same era require you to concentrate on what you're doing at the wheel and going by Metcalfe's review, the Shamal is no exception to that. Drive it like a modern car and they feel rubbish. But driven properly, thinking about what is happening underneath you, then they transform and become really rewarding to drive. I can well imagine the Shamal will easily be a handful, the Ghibli can already scare me at times and it only has 280odd horses. They're really thrilling cars to drive and I think that, combined with rarity, is what's pushing up the price of the Shamal.
You just don't know - the biturbos we're despised in their day, even reviled as debasing the Maserati brand but are now being considered by collectors so the 3200, with boomareng lights, I think will have a value in the future.
Like most of these cars however, the increase in value is mostly offset by the expense in the interim period sadly.

"A friend of mine has a Maserati 3200GT, a car that you might admire. His latest bill was £6000. It started with the usual throttle body failure and sensors. Anyway, he filled it with petrol and it then wouldn't start. A handy bump-start fried the electronics, he failed to make his £45 appointment and had to join the AA to get the car recovered - for £150."
He recently sold it, via auction and it made less than £10k. The new owner was soon on the phone to the auctioneer, asking how to deactivate the alarm....he rang my mate who had no idea...
I was also tempted by a 3200 but I know that there would always be something wrong with it and there is no-one round here that I could take it to.
They're cheap now for good reason but I agree that the very best of them will become more valuable eventually.
Personally I can't get over the price Ferrari 550s are making now.

UK had 75 Asetto Corsa's and 259 in total worldwide.
I love the Shamal, but for much less money I would argue that I have a pumped up version of the same engine, and better looks.
Incidentally, a 550 Maranello would wet my appetite if I could afford one. Apparently quite a few of the same team worked on the 3200.
It is also said by some (Quentin Wilson, others online) that a Manual 3200 can lap Fiorano faster than a 500 Maranello, seems surprising, maybe that is an urban myth.
At the moment the 3200 offers a lot of character and charm for the money, it feels genuinely special. I even chose one over a Gransport.
