Hi all,

Anyone into 70's and 80's custom cars? I don't see a lot of pics or mention about these cars (maybe it's just me who still likes them? although I will admit I would probably feel a little embarrassed driving one of them down the street now).

I love the jacked up rear ends, wolfrace wheels and custom paint jobs, here's a few pics:

OK sometimes the pics above aren't showing so they can be seen here: http://www.uk-hotrods.co.uk/v2/old_photos/

Some would call desicration or sacriledge but personaly I like them when well done. Used to but Hot Car in the 70's and even went to a couple of shows - Edinburgh?
Prefer the subtle (like the Consul above)to the outrageous now but love vans etc too. Probably explains my love of Trikes even though I cannot see the point in them - too wide to filter and too bulbous to take through the bends but thats another story.
Hi Skydriver,

I suppose it all depends on when we were at the age to start appreciating cars, I was reading street machine mag in the early/mid 80's in my mid teens (still at school) and so my influences are of those cars at that time. Although obviously I still like others cars prior to and after this period.

Here's something I really really regret. Back in 1996 I got married, not only did i sell my Camaro that I had at the time thinking that I would be settling down, I also through away my collection of Street machine and custom car mags (straight in the bin!?). Although I have managed to get hold of a few copies since then from various sources.

PS: I'm now divorced (god I so regret that..................throwing away of the mags that is biggrin)

That's a very unusual sight Ben, not seen one of these in the flesh and well done for not following the crowd. I trully believe that a car is an individual thing and I place that well above a cars performance ability.

All this talk takes me back to my youth , anyone else remember the night they stopped the Chelsea Cruise ? we were stranded by the bridge for ages but with that much to look at we didn't care. If you want to see these cars in abundance you need to go to the Aldershot Wheels day in spring , normally Sh*te weather but great cars.
In all my years of being into cars I have never been to the Chelsea Cruise and I never knew about the Aldershot Wheels Day eek Unfortunately I'm also far too busy to get out and about anymore to any car shows frown

I think it's a bit of a shame that with all the hard work that did go into customising some of these cars that very few (If any) are still about today. I've done searches for one's that I remember from the front of Street Machine and Custom Car and I haven't seen one being driven or even kept somewhere at all. I particularly remember 2 Cortina's, a black flamed mk3 with a large rear spoiler and a blue mk3 with multi-coloured striped paint work. I know things move on, but it's just a shame with all that hard work being carried out.

Hey great post! and yes it was that Cortina (Satisfaction Cortina - couldn't remember the name), love the rodsnsods thread, some great pics - haven't read it all yet, but saw that the Cortina was on someones 4 post lift waiting to be brought back to life. Also that orange Ford Pop 300e van was for sale recently on here in the classifieds for around £3500 (was very tempted).

Cheers

Always seems a pity when they end up in the scrappy. All that hard work and then, gone.

This V8 Cortina is still alive and kicking.
A workmates brother built it,came down to our monthly rod meet at gatwick a couple of weeks ago.
Sadly his brother died some years ago so he now looks after it.He also owns/built a blown 7500cc V8 Ford Pop!

Me,I love a 70's custom,so much so I got me own!!

I like the silver colour on your pop, makes a change from all those bright colours on the others you see so often (not that there's anything wrong with that, just a nice change).

Here's a rave from the grave (everyone thought it had been scrapped) - Astral Traveller - a show winner from the early 70's. I saw it being built and always admired it. I don't know whether to have a punt on it or not.

Would be great to see that back up and running and doing the shows again. I hope whoevers bought it knows what they're doing and does a decent job on it!

Well, I decided to buy it. I'll try and return it to how it was - I still know the original builder.
It will be number 3 in my queue of Minors though.

Nice one plastic orange. Keep us posted on the progress, I realise with all those other cars you have that it may take some time, but don't let it rot away mate, too many have already gone down that route.

PS 36 months and only 10 posts? - what have you been doing - lol.

I remember a few of the custom cars that were built in the 70's, the C-cab's were all the rage at one time but the car that really topped the lot was the 6 wheeled Wolfrace Sonic. 4 small diameter front wheels, 2 wide back wheels and 2 "computer" controlled Rover V8 engines coupled to a weird and wonderfull drive train. Pics of it are on the internet, I saw it at a Custom car show in 1982, think it was Belle View. Some pics of it here.

I remember this car, think it's on the cover of one of my old mags. Haven't read the article though.
