This is an "I love my train service" thread!! smile

Following on from the doom and gloom trains to London thread (http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&t=485037 ), I wondered if any of you can suggest some GOOD commuting train routes to London?

We're trying to find a place to move to (currently live inside London, want to go outside), but haven't come up with an ideal.

When looking at a property's details they always say where the nearest commuting station is, and that's easy to look up, as is if it has a car park. But all this talk of you have to get on a waiting list to get a place in a car park and all the trains being full aaaand the trains being crap, etc.. is quite a problem.

There was one area I was looking at that seemed to work in theory. Until I met a chap at work who actually uses it who told me the reality.

So, if anyone can suggest something that works, it'd be helpful for me to have a look around that area.

Ta

(It needs to go into Waterloo or London Bridge.. and have car parking (available!!))

How far out of London do you want to go?

Wadhurst's pretty good. It's on the Kent/East Sussex border, about an hour into London Bridge.
Time more than distance. 30 mins would be ideal, 45 mins would be great, an hour would be right at the maximum.

Apart from the 2.5K cost I’m reasonable happy with my commute from Guildford to Waterloo. Takes 35 ish minutes, and I always get a seat.

I don't have to park, so don't know the cost as I walk to the station.
What is the parking at Guildford like? I see a few places crop up at village close enough.

Tonbridge is a hadily placed because it is where two main lines join and consequently trains are reasonably frequent. You get a good choice of London Terminus too - London Bridge, Waterloo East, Charing Cross and Cannon Street are all well served and some trains will only stop at Sevenoaks in between. I go to Cannon Street which takes about 45mins in the morning and a bit less in the evening - knock off 5 mins or so for London Bridge.
This sounds really useful and I haven't considered it yet. Thanks - I will browse!

Ben some nice places in Harlington Bedfordshire train times are around 1 hrs 3-8 mins to London bridge First Capital Connect.
Cheers Oggs, but it's a bitch to get to Canary Wharf from there and doesn't work well for Mrs.P's commute either. Has to be South or West really.

That reminds me, I was going to PM you! wink

Although there has already been a rant today about C2C, I find there services is generally very good (not excellent), only once or twic a month I have issues (this month was last night and this morning, hopefully no more). The best part is when there are problems with the C2C line I can jump on the District line which takes an extra 15 minutes, no big deal.
Which is the C2C line? Can you suggest some stations at about the 30 / 45 min from London point?

Failing about once a month is do-able.

Not what you are looking for but I have been commuting from Bromley for 10 years now all over London. Walk to station - 5 minutes - train to Victoria - 17 minutes - tube anywhere
No, not really. It's got to be outside the M25 really.

We're currently in the Greenwich area which is fine for commuting (for us), but we yearn for countryside and have made the decision to endure worse commuting to have this.

I would echo the positive comments made about Southern Railways, who serve the South Coast via Surrey into Victoria and London Bridge. Been using them daily for nearly 3 years and have no complaint.

I commute daily from Surrey into Victoria. Plenty of parking at 3 quid a day 4 mins walk from station. I always get a seat on the 0700 in the morning. Plenty of trains to choose from that pass through the East Croydon hub.
Sorry, but from which station is that?

Lets be fair. Tonbridge is a bit of a weird one. You have to visit it to understand. Everything points to it being good... but.

The villages around are lovely, Hildenborough is nice but there are nicer places.
Err... ok. Not been there - didn't even know it existed smile

May have a drive round this weekend

But what about woking? walton? esher? surbiton that kind of area.. they are on the hole not that cheap, but any kind of house can be had, from spanked out flats, to village homes.. And all within 30 mins to waterloo..
Yeah, I've kept my eye on Woking and surrounding areas as that's the one that keeps coming up. Interested to hear of others "my train's great!" stories though. Surbiton isn't different enough from where I am right now.

pikey, moving so soon after your loft extension? eek
hehe Yes! And bloody nice the end result is too. We love it! Good thing is that the all estate agents agree say the amount it's put on the house's value is way above what it cost (financially... not in stress!!).

Is it me or do most posts to this thread have little to do with answering the OP's question,

OP says:
Parking at station needed

PH'er response:
I don't know about parking as I walk to the station
Ah, but that's PH for you - it's par for the course! smile

Just like occasionally someone will come along with nothing to add but feel the need to say something like "Oh FFS, I can't belive you lot are talking about train car parks"

Amongst all the shit, there will be useful information - it just needs sifting through to find! smile

Yuch! I think MK rates amongst worst places I would ever want to live! (Apologies to anyone who does live there, but... actually, bugger the apologies - MOVE!!! hehe )

yesI'm on that line. I commute Haywards Heath-London Bridge every day.

The trains are punctual and clean (although pretty packed by the time they get to HH).

Parking at HH station shouldn't be a problem.
Ahhh, hello wavey

There have been quite a few places around there we have been looking at which have the commuting as a 'drive to HH'. So you reckon parking's ok, but will have to stand?

We were also looking at a place another stop up, Balcombe. Looks nice, but I suspect not enough trains so when there is a stopping train, it'll be rammed.

Can believe noone has mentioned 'one' service to Stratford, DLR/Jubilee to Canary Wharf
Needs to be South or West as MrsP sometimes works in a location to the West.
