Why do beards itch?

I'm at that point in my life where I've got no "job" as such so don't really bother shaving until it gets to a length where it starts to annoy me, or when people start to confuse me for a tramp...

However it's getting really itchy now and I'm wondering if it's just a stage or whether it will pass at one point and just feel normal? My Dad has had a beard for about 30 years and it obviously doesn't seem to bother him.

I'm only going it "just because I can" for a while, it's not a permanent thing

I guess I've had about 10 days worth of growth so far. Just put some moisturiser on which seems to have helped a bit.

I have designer stubble most of the time, just figured I'd try looking like a hobo for a while
