My Saab 95 just stopped working in traffic - AA said the fuel pump was not working so this was replaced but still the car won't start - it cranks over but thats it.

Can anyone suggest what else needs to be checked as Im at a loss.

Thanks for any info.

Crank Position Sensor or coil pack?
Recently replaced the coil pack and just replaced the fuel pump and still wont start

When my 9-5 did this it was the crank sensor.
Replaced the CPS 2 years ago - Would it go again that quickly ?

Car just stopped working with no notice at all - Quite scary had I been going at speed.

Didn't have it cut out when running. It would run perfectly and then you'd switch it off and it would turn over but refuse to fire up.
No the car just cut out with no warning and has not started since - Its like the fuel is not getting to the plugs but the pump has been replaced and powers all ok so not sure what else it is.

Hmm. From memory a failed CPS should just drop the car into limp mode rather than kill it, but it's a common failure to start. I'm most likely wrong however. I'd be tempted to pull the CPS and check the resistance across it (I'm sure google can tell you what it should be)
If not CPS, fuel pump perhaps?
Thanks Mr E for your advice - I replaced pump a few days ago so will give the cps a replacement to see if that works :-)

over on uksaabs someone posted just up a very similar cut out/fail to restart. turns out it was an open circuit on the injection - 30A fuse had blown, worth checking unless recovery already did

paul
Hi Paul just checked the fuse and its all ok - Im at a genuine loss as to what to do !

Im going to try OBD but do you know where the plugin is based on the Saab 9-5 ?

Thanks for your help and to everyone else.

the diagnostic port is recessed into the lower trim/knee panel underneath the steering wheel - there's a little pull down flap where the panel meets the centre console, it's tucked away behind that

paul
Thanks Paul - I will check to see what codes come up.

Also just to confirm when cranked the rev counter jumps around.

sounds like CPS should be OK then and that's usually a hot/cold start problem anyway. whereabouts are you - ideally could do with dropping a known good DIC in to see what happens

given that it's cranking then ignition switch is also probably ok.

could be low fuel pressure.

i'd also check all earth leads, a common cause of non-starts. have heard of the wiring connector to the DIC failing internally giving a difficult to trace failure to start

might be "back to basics" troubleshooting time though

paul
Its really odd Paul - It literally just stopped and eveything from new DIC to Fuel Pump and now CPS has been changed but nothing !

Will check OBD and let you know how I get on - Thanks for your time on this problem Paul and to everyone else.

Unlikely but are the pipes to and from the fuel pump connected to the right place?
Thats a good point - I took picture before swapping pump just to make sure :-)

Ok managed to fix the problem :

The pressure of the fuel running to the plugs was very low and just dribbling out.

Clamping the return fuel hose from the engine allowed the fuel pressure to build up and now the clamp has been removed the problem has gone away.

Replacing the fuel pump must have caused a loss in fuel pressure but now all is running perfectly.

Strange end to the problem

Thanks for all the advice posted up - Much appreciated :-)

Fickle beasts these Saabs smile

I "fixed" my full beam issue by tapping a relay the other day, if only all my woes could be sorted so easily.

Glad you're back on the road.
Totally agree - These cars can be a challenge !

Thanks for your kind words :-)

Did you resolve this problem... As I have similar..... It started like bad petrol ......coughing and spluttering....then wouldn't start. AA said it was crank sensor .... Changed that still not start... Then changed the ignition coil pack. Problem still exists
Try the fuel pump (located under rear seat) I got a secondhand part and car started fine after that - plus its an easy fit.
