What satnav still works with google maps

Just back from an epic European road trip. I need a new sat nav.
The one thing that will sway the purchase is finding one that I can plan a route using google maps and then download that straight to the sat nav.
I tried with my ancient Garmin and some third party software prior to the trip, but couldn't get it to work.
Somebody has suggested that I need to use an Android instead.
Any help or advice very gratefully received. Thanks in advance.
