Purchased an Airfix F5 on eBay for £2.95 ! Done a bit of reading on it and it sounds like it's a pig to build lol !

So a few questions .....

1) It wwill be silver and I intend to use Acrylic paint. Whats it like to brush? Can you buy it in aerosols ? Still have ny old Compressor but no Airbrush.

2) What are you using to fill nowdays ?

3) I used to use masking take and pink stuff called maskol to mask. What do you use now ?

4) What about adhesive ? Used to use basic model glue, superglue and clear glue that you could brush on.

6) Panel lines. Used a Rotring Pen. What methods now ?

Actually looking forward to getting my hands on it !

Ok an update ! Well not really as i've not started the kit yet. I have managed to moved all the crap in the gararge however to let me get to my old bitsa box. Im surprised that after 20 years ive managed to salvage around 80 asorted Humbrol Enamels and a dozen or so Tamaya Acrylics.

It's a start ! Now i need a few tools and i'm ready !

Dump the paint, it'll be knackered.
Yeah probably ! I'll keep it for the time though because it makes it look like I'm not starting from scratch !!!

Humbrol paint of that era had surprising longevity. The acrylics will be useless. I'd still go out and buy a fresh batch of acrylics if I were you - and a cheap Chinese air brush.
Any suggestions for the Airbrush Eric. Loads of cheap ones on eBay but are any of them worth buying ?

This was a model built after a 20 year gap:

My pal's airbrush used on the above is an Harder & Steenbeck Evolution, bought as a package from little cars:

If you're going for an airbrush, get a half decent one and be done with it. If you're using acrylics you'll definitely need one.
Well if my F5 looks quarter as good as that Spit I will be happy !

Didn't really buy the F5 for price I just fancied it. Well ok price factored a bit but last night I spent £40 on bits lol !

Having a run to Doncaster Air Museum today so might pick something else up from their shop.

I still have my old compressor and tank. I'll have to see if it works. I did have a half decent Airbrush. Think it was a Badger and cost me around £120 all those years ago. Every so often I find a bit of it kicking around the house or garage....

Ok just arrived back home. Browsing through their pretty decent Model selection and a F-84G Thunderjet caught my eye. It was only £4.99 and I had never made one before so I thought what the hell !

I had never heard of the maker and I have only just noticed on the box that it said 'Easy assembly' ! Alarm bells were ringing.

Opening the box I'm pleasantly surprised. The parts seem very well formed and the detail looks good. The fuselage is in one piece ! Decals also look pretty good.

Great day at Doncaster. Turned out to be their Helicopter day with the arrival of a totally mint blue Gazelle followed by another Gazelle and a fancy Alouette.

Here's pics of the kit and the choppers !

I'm so pleased this thread is someone actually asking for advice on their return to the hobby. Britmodeller seems to have lots of threads entitled "First kit in XX years" at which point the author unveils work of an infeasibly high standard. It makes me sick. wink
lol ! I'll post pictures of the finished article. It will certaintly NOT be of an infeasibly high standard !

No problem MD :-) I did consider banning you from the thread but as I'm in a good mood tonight I'll let you off.

Seriously though I'm not one to be bothered by thread hijacks ! As far as I'm concerned I've a lot to learn from the more experienced modeller.

In other words someone who has built more than one model lol !

So hijack away !

Prompted by this thread (and because I'm waiting for the oil paint to dry on the SE5a) I made a start on my Academy Thunderjet. I bought it for £4.99 purely to try out Alclad II, so it'll be straight OOB.

Fantastic ! smile Step by step guide to painting please !

Sorry this is taking so long but I've had a chest infection and a weeks hols ! Just doing a little bit when I feel like it.

Today done some filling on the wing roots, fuselage and a few other places. It's every bit as messy as I remember it !

Is it just me or does the filler go everywhere apart from where you want it for everyone ?

No handy tool to apply so ripped the end of the cardboard filler packet and used that !

Cheers I need to read and digest the other thread. I'm still at the sanding filler stage. I only manage to snatch a bit of time here and their but I find it very restfull.

I post a pic when I have it filled and sanded. Maybe around 2015 however !
