Customising a 1/18th model

I'm thinking of getting the Mrs a model mini cooper like she has as a stocking filler for Christmas.

I've found one that is the right colours (Green with white roof) however hers has a chequered roof and stripes up the bonnet.

What's the best way to get some of these made up? obviously I could have a go with MS paint and a printer, however I managed to fail GCSE art so I don't hold out much hope... any ideas before I purchase the model?

Thanks for the suggestions chaps, seems to be more of a pain in the tits then I thought, as they were the options that I had come up with!
