Evening all,

Just thought I'd show some pictures of my Tamiya XC offroading in the snow we've had biggrin Chassis is a Tamiya XC, long wheelbase, with a chinese Land Rover toy body. Front and rear locked diffs, standard motor for now, but I've got a 3speed truck gearbox which I'd like to fit, no idea how.

Anyway, its been a LONG project, and I finally though sod it, and boshed it together, glad I did, cause it's so much fun smile

Some pics:

Ignore the mess of wires on the roof please, need to re-wire the spotlights in!

Most of the work has been done on the Bodyshell to be honest, it used to be a normal defender 90 with a full cab, but I lopped a load out of it, bobtailed it a bit, and made a pickup bed for it, all made with plasticard smile Made a rollcage out of soldered brass bar (does have back stays but they broke off recently, need soldering back on...) and made a little roofrack. Its got headlights and sidelights (tailights too) and 6 spotlights off a Lancia 037 tamiya model (just bought the light bits, I wish I had a full 037!) And finally made a custom bumper, again out of brass, with a fairlead and recovery points for the winch (which is an old butchered servo, this is a heavy beast but it manages to pull itself clear smile)

I've got a load of pictures of the build on http://s4.photobucket.com/albums/y125/jimbobulon/P... if you want to take a look smile

The performance is good offroad, at my parents house theres a small wood in the garden full of obstacles, I'll get some pictures tomorrow of it driving around in there, at the moment I'm just having fun tazzing about in the snow biggrin

I hope I haven't come over as too much of a geek wink

I was on scale4x4rc, years ago when I started it! there was a full build thread on there, Might see if I can dig it out smile

The rear arms are a shambles, to be honest. I needed to lengthen the wheelbase to accomodate the shell, but ran out of rod ends so at the moment it's a 3 link setup which, to be honest, is crap. the rear end needs sorting properly, then it'll be more capable.

The front is even worse, I used solid rods instead of dampers, as the TLT shocks can't handle the weight of the chassis, let alone the body too lol, its quite capable as is though, and hopefully will gain a bit of grip from the extra weight, when I can find stiffer springs!

Just a kit motor and Mtroniks waterproof ESC at the moment, not giving me a huge amount of control though. I'm really trying to find a way to fit the 3spd gearbox in, but getting drive from that to the XC chassis is the final hurdle, I've no idea how. When I get it done, it'll have a super low crawling gear, just less than walking pace, and then a speedier one for general cruising (I hope)

need to finish the suspension off, get the gearbox mounted, then it'll nearly be done!

I'll try and sort the photobucket album now smile

Oh yes, and I'm going to set to with a spade in the wood tomorrow, make some more challenging terrain for it biggrin For now, I'm off outside again biggrin

http://www.scale4x4rc.org/forums/showthread.php?t=... heres a thread when I originally started the pickup project, I'm still trying to find the original thread...

Errr... I either added an extra planet gear inside the diff casing, or glued them together, it's been a while since I did it! With all 4 wheels locked it's actually quite capable, I think its great fun smile

Hehe, you're Jimbobulon! I'm Insomniac, I posted on that thread! Small Interwebs...
Bugger me! Small world eh?! You'll know its been AGES since I built it then wink

I've got some more scale pics to put up, I've found the most perfect material for scale mudflaps, and actually found some springs that support the weight of the front now, so actually have front suspension, not solid tie rods biggrin

I need to work on the ESC, its not very controllable, and reverse is like 25% full power for some reason :S

Its off a cheap chinese R/C toy (simple 2wd plastic thing) simply nicked the body off it biggrin

on the scale4x4rc forums, a guy called RA0128 (I think) has a handle on them, he's an individual but sort of imports them as a hobby as I understand it. Or failing that, eBay!

Made a few changes to it (trimmed the bodyshell and arch flares, as it was getting stuck in the mud. Rear suspension is sorted, and quite miraculously, works really well! its got a load of droop, and the dampers can dislocate to allow for extra long travel, scale wise, its got just over a metre of flex in the rear suspension hehe

That chassis looks good, but I don't really know! The Axial SCX-10(?) is highly rated from what I've read? Shame the XC has independant front suspension really!

Hi there.
Just stumbled across this thread whilst browsing the PH forums. I am well impressed with this. I have been considering building a half-scale 90 for my kids for some time, but this looks to be quite expensive and would cause problems for transportation and storage. This model seems to be much more of a plan!! I assume it's 1/10 scale? Where do the wheels and BFG tyres come from? Where was the cheap plastic body sourced? I've not done anything like this before, so what's the cost likely to be for a chassis, servos, remote handset, motor etc? I have looked at Kamtec who do a basic chassis etc kit for about £100 - is this a good starting point?
I'm going to do some more research now - wish me luck!!
Thanks smile

The scale is about 1:8.5, but I used a 1/10 scale Tamiya XC/CC-01 chassis, which is a good starter point (and great fun to build biggrin) (this pdf file is the build manual, which shows you whats involved with making a kit, you can get them pre-built though smile)

I can't find any of the bodies on eBay at the moment, but they usually crop up, a red defender 90, mine has had quite a bit of bodywork to be fair but take a look at this thread http://www.scale4x4rc.org/forums/showthread.php?t=... for some ideas of whats possible (there are some VERY good builds on there smile)

Cost is probably £~100 for the kit, £50 for radio and a battery or two, and then maybe £30 for the landrover body and some bits and bobs, the BF goodrich tyres are tamiya ones (come standard with the touareg) I'm running them on some tamiya 2 piece wheels for a bit of bling biggrin

Check out rc4wd.com if you want to spend some money, they have some cool stuff, like steel beadlock wheels, winches etc (I made my own winch out of a servo, which is pretty easy when you know how smile)

Hope that helps, heres some pics of todays outing biggrin

I got beached on a brow here, so why not just winch it out! (a longer, more tedious process than just picking it up, but I was trying to be scale wink)

Sorry! forgot to put the link in! http://www.tamiya.com/english/rc/rcmanual/cc01.pdf

Using a servo as a winch, , you just have to remove the circuit board out of the servo body itself, leave the potentiometer at 0% (otherwise it will always run in one direction or another) and then use wires to connect the circuit board to the motor (the motor is soldered straight onto the board in a servo)

I can get pictures if you like, but thats all the modification I did really, I added a 7.2v BEC plug to the servo board, just so it has enough power to pull the thing (can pull the whole truck off the ground, which comes in handy biggrin) and it works great so far smile I just mounted the servo in the front of the chassis, and used two round servo horns as a winch drum, the servo gearbox seems to be strong enough, and just the right speed smile
