I'm unable to change down gear into 2nd or 3rd without selecting reverse .

Any ideas as to what the problem could be?

well known faults on the mk3. Quite a few had their gearbox's replaced by Renault whilst in warranty.
It'll probably be expensiveweeping
This is a mk 2 Clio 172 cup

As in gearlinkage, synchromesh?

Might take a punt on a 2nd hand box as I've spent too much on this car like cambelt,dephaser,New clutch since January.

Try adjusting the gear linkage underneath, first. Get a mate to help you go through the gears and try first adjusting the nut/bolt section of the two halves on the left in this video;

It may take a few attempts but you'll get the hang of it. I just wouldn't bother trying it without someone in the car to go through the gears for you.

Good luck.
Good call.

Drove it to work weds/thurs and its been fine apart from reverse and 1st being very close together.

Going to let mechanic have it in a fortnight and check gearbox mounts, gear linkages etc, he seems to think it's not gearbox related as it wouldn't of sorted itself out.

I agree. Good shout on the mounts, the 'dog-bone' mounts are prone to wear on these. A good test would be to see how much your gear stick moves when in third gear, between applying throttle and lifting off. It's always quite a lot on these anyway, but if excessive it could contribute to gear selection difficulty.

Whilst he/she has got the vehicle, ask them to do a gearbox oil change anyway. Renault (and a lot of other manufacturers) don't have it as part of their maintenance schedule. To me, this seems bizarre...sealed units, that may be so, but they still have breathers and these fluids are hygroscopic.

Good luck and don't forget to reply once resolved smile
I've got a dogbone mount waiting to be fitted.

He did the clutch a month ago so think he'd of done gearbox oil then?
