Clio 172 Cup - bag of spanners
Discussion
My dear old dad (74) looks as though he probably won't be driving again anytime soon, so I have brought his 2003 36,000 mile 172 Cup back to my house, partly to remove temptation and partly because I feel a bit sorry for the blooming thing!
I took it out yesterday for a bit of a run - first one it has had this year and whilst it goes really well, it sounds terrible at idle - I can't say he has looked after it particularly well - I don't think it has had much in terms of servicing in the past few years and I think I fancy giving it a bit of TLC but am wary that it's probably only worth about £1K and chucking too much money at it will be a bit of a waste of time. I reckon it needs about £300/400 worth of dent removal and paint, all four wheels need refurbing and Lord knows what mechanically.
I read somewhere that spark plugs make a big difference (?) and I have no idea if the cambelt has ever been changed. Firstly, is the former true and secondly, what sort of cost am I looking at for a belt change?
I may well have a few more questions over the coming weeks, as I uncover more horrors
And if anyone has a pair of 2's that go on the B-pillar, I'll take them off your hands. At the moment it's a Cup17

He's had it probably 10 years or so and yesterday was the first time I have driven it,
Shame on you! One of the best car's I've ever owned Was looking through some paperwork last night - he bought it in February 2007 with 17,000-ish miles and has put on less than 20,000 miles in 10 years. He has actually spent a fair few quid on getting bits repaired but no service history of any note that I can find
I might take it on as a project to see if I can get it back to something approaching it's former glory. Think mum is quite happy to see the back of it actually - I asked her for any paperwork that might be at their house and she said I could have it

Yep, OE plugs are these NGKs, don't use anything else.
As it's a cup, it's unlikely to have aircon. Because of this the belt service inc. dephaser is bit easier and you should get change from £500.
But at that age and with no service history, you'll want to change the aux belt, tensioner, water pump etc. at the same time which is going to be at least another couple of hundred.

The mechanicals worry me a bit. I know it needs doing but without knowing what I'm doing with it long-term, do I really want to slap the thick end of a grand into it?

I'll let you know what it fails on
Not too bad actually - centre & rear exhaust mounts shot and handbrake not quite up to scratch. Mounts are pretty easy to sort but not so sure about the handbrake - don't think the 172s have a compensator do they?Been quoted £800 to do the timing belt, dephaser pulley and auxiliary belt. I know I 'should' get it done but I've still not decided what to do with the car yet and I doubt getting it done makes it worth £800 more
And a couple of pics - bit dirty but much better than it has been until recently.

Id get it done pronto if you're driving it about. Without they're a ticking time bomb for them snapping and the car being written off due to engine damage.
£800 is far too much, you should be looking at half of that.
For a timing chain, dephaser pulley and auxiliary belt? The parts cost more than that!£800 is far too much, you should be looking at half of that.
If you know somewhere in the southeast that can do it for that, then I'm all
Thanks Stoat - I didn't miss it, I just read it as being how much the parts were, not a price including the labour.
Dad's has got climate as well so that pushed it up to around 550 inc VAT (assuming I have read it correctly?). And it's only another 70-odd for the water pump as well, so I think I'd be daft not to get that done at the same time.

I think I probably will be keeping it - no updates since my last post as I've just been too busy with other stuff.
It failed the MOT on exhaust mounts which I sorted and then promptly failed the retest as it decided to dump all its power steering fluid on the floor, presumably because of the shaker plates and the lock-to-lock parts of the test
Need to get it booked in for the belt and will get the steering fluid sorted at the same time - hopefully it is just a host rather than the pump, given that it was fine before the MOT test

what did it fail on ?
is it at engine dynamics for a cambelt change or are you turboing it ?

Going in for dephaser pulley, cambelt and water pump etc etc and also get the power steering sorted (hoping it’s just a hose that’s popped).
