I am using a Cooper S this week whilst the owner is abroad and i really must say that it's a terrific little car with one missed trick. Not enough bhp. With hot hatches putting out 300, 350 and even 400 bhp why on earth is the most powerful Mini furnished with a mere 189 bhp? That's 4 pot derv output.
Yes the limited run JCW will have a tad more but the Cooper S title car deserves more than that from fully 2 litres, surely?
Roomy, agile, good looking to many and top quality. Sensibly priced too. My mate got this for £17,000 barely run in. But my 2006 Cooper GP had 218 bhp, weighed 1090 kgs and 9 years has seen little progress in my book. Yes the GP was a ltd edition but the Cooper S was up at 170, over 10 years ago.
Mini must be losing sales because of this and other than the superb torque from virtually tickover it really does feel ordinary on performance. Indeed i was left for dead by a BMW 123D last night. Not great.
