Hi all,

Can anyone confirm if the "Death rattle" was sorted on post '10 cars? I have used the search but can't find a definitive answer.

My car sounds pretty rattly on cold start-up, particularly if the engine is given a about 2kRPM of revs and then allowed to drop back down to idle. The car is a 61 plate MCS.

The trouble is the engine sounds pretty rubbish and diesel-like on tick-over anyway (thanks direct injection) and frankly all the "Death Rattle" and "healthy R56 engine" video's on youtube sound the same to me. Its only really noticeable when i pull out of my garage due to the sound being very confined.

I have about a week(!) of approved used warranty left on the car, but don't want to book the car in and potentially pay an inspection fee, if the problem doesn't exist on late '11 cars!

TIA, Janes

Thanks for your response Maracus,

Yes i thought they had solved the issue to, although i don't suppose that any engine is totally immune to an issue like this. I have booked it in at the dealer anyway, just to be sure. I would rather have it checked out whilst it is still under warranty, for peace of mind.

I looked into extending the MINI warranty and decided it wasn't good VFM. However if it turns out that it does need part of the timing system replaced, then that will have been the second piece of warranty work in 12 months (the high pressure fuel pump was replaced under warranty), which makes me think it may be worth taking out! I will look again at the costs.
