Midweek accommodation in, er, Wellignborough
Discussion
Have just landed a job in Wellingborough (currently live in West London) and need to find somewhere to live. I will keep the London flat and return at weekends- only 50 mins from St Pancras to Wellingborough.
I know nothing about the area and so any pointers would be much appreciated. I will look to rent somewhere for six months and upon successful completion of the probationary period buy an outbased pad. I only need a place for me so one or two bed flat or maybe a small house. Two key priorities are 1) must be a decent area 2) not more than 15 minutes drive from the North side of Wellingborough. If there is off road parking that would be preferable but not necessarily a deal breaker.
I'd appreciate any advice and experience from the collective.

There aren't many decent town areas within 15 mins of Wellingborough to be honest. I have a house in Higham Ferrers which is ok, and the villages on the A509 south of the A45 (towards Santa Pod) are nice. There won't be many flats to rent/buy in those areas as its mainly houses but the costs are relatively cheap in any event so I would just rent a small house in one of those areas. As I say, A509 run generally has nicer villages than North of Wellingborough. If you went as far as Olney that is pleasant, albeit you may be less keen as the travel is further, the costs higher and if you are commuting by train (wellingborough is an easy run to London) then you probably don't want to gravitate that distance from the town itself (although you won't want to spend nights out there...).
Thanks for that, I'm going to hole up in Chelveston for a few weeks and suss the area out. I can see lots of apartments in Rushden, what are your thoughts?Shnozz said:
Call me a snob but I wouldn't touch it with yours.
Higham seemed quite nice with a slightly rough undertone. Rushden seemed a hole.
As I say, I've still got a house in Higham and it rents for buttons. I can't think it would cost you much more to find somewhere nice rather than endure somewhere stty.
Having spent a couple of days in the area totally concur re Rushden. Only places for rent in Higham (not a bad place as you say) are on a lego estate which isn't really me. Rothwell is looking favourite at the moment, nice market town and just under twenty mins to the office.Higham seemed quite nice with a slightly rough undertone. Rushden seemed a hole.

If you're keeping your place in London, why don't you commute to Wellingborough? Trains have a good service.
Agree re the good service, would still be 90mins door to door and the role is far from 9-5 so I need to be close. Lots of travel involved throughout the East Midlands so commuting won't really work.Shnozz said:

A season ticket is £6k - for £500PCM you could probably rent a small place in those parts as its cheap as chips. entropy said:
Considering OP doesn't want to live in a lego estate best bet would be the villages in the surrounding area barring Mawsley: Mears Ashby, Sywell/Overstone, Wilby, Orlingbury, Walgrave, Pytchley
Correct, have holed up in Souldrop for the time being. Appreciate all the advice folks.Gassing Station | Northamptonshire | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
