Went up to Cheshire again on Thursday to do some more work on this:
It is 17 years old, one owner from new, full (and I mean full) service history and is 993cc, 3 cylinder, 12 valve, twin cam, fuel injected, turbocharged and intercooled. Weighs less than a tonne and produces 99bhp as standard.
The car was parked up 5 years sgo with nothing wrong with it other than a slightly sticking front caliper and the owners need for a bigger car.
We had to butcher the front pads to free the brakes off and have fitted new front discs, pads, flexi hoses and back plates.
other than that I had to sort a bad connection on a sidelight.
It should have gone for an MOT today but didn't due to a mix up so on Wednesday my brother is taking it off to the MOT station. If all goes well i should have it in a fortnight.
Needs lots of fettling and TLC but should be oodles of fun if memory serves.
I was the one who suggested my mate purchase the car back in 1990 and went with him to test drive it and I drove it off the forecourt on 1st August 1990 in Ashby de la Zouch on the day he took delivery. On the same day we drove to Edinburgh for dinner (I kid you not!) and took it back the folllowing day to Ashby de la Zouch for its first service having exceeded the 600 miles when it was due.
I was there when it hit 100,000 miles and we stopped and took a picture of the odometer.
And, for the info of the ladies, this car took me to my wedding, which of course is why I want to save it! That's what I'm telling the missus

It's a bugger trying to organise stuff to be done on this car from a distance. Once the welding is done I'll be up there to get the rest sorted and get it MOT'd.

Garage reckon it looks pretty solid considering age, mileage and stood for 5 years.
I will probablt have to wait a couple of weeks to pick it up as really busy next week and away on hols week after.
I had to cheat and get the garage to do the welding. they also had to replace the 2 handbrake cables as not able to free them. Also needed a tyre.

After an eventful first few miles yesterday evening involving a disappearing fan belt, I piloted the little tyke home this afternoon 
Puts a smile on your face!
Needs lots of TLC though. Paintwork is rough and underbonnet filthy/rusty.

Service is done followed by an Italian tune up yesterday.
Today I spent 3.5 hours T -cutting the little tyke and discovered a white car trying to get out from under the grey one. I took some pics but had the camera on the wrong setting so they're not good enough to publish.
Took the little guy over to see JB and Blipi and JB ended up with a stupid grin on his face.
I shall probably be at Sywell in it tomorrow.

I started earlier today just looking for an electrical fault (rear wiper) and ended up stripping the rear seats and side panels out to check for corrosion as I know these cars can be prone to a bit of tin worm in these areas. I was pleasantly surprised at how little rust there is.
It needs some attention especially around the rear seat belt poits bt otherwise reasonably sound.

They are becoming rare.
I think it'll have to be patched up for now as no garage to work in yet (build starts on 7th Jan at last!) and funds currentky a problem bue to build but in the long term it will be restored to as near original condiion as possible.
Its currently my everyday driver.

I remember the 1st of August 1990, my old man picked up his brand new Sierra 1.8 LX Estate, not quite as cool though...

I was really lucky on 1st August 1990 as my other mate has bought a new MX5 and at one minute past midnight we went out for a blast in it and then at 8.00am was picked up by my other mate to go and pick up the GTti which WE then drove to Edinburgh and back (from Leicestershire). We dropped the car off on 2nd August for its first service (600 miles). You should have seen the look on the salesman's face!

it was 720 miles (check the paperwork!)I know I was there !!!
Still, that look on the taxi drivers face when he TRIED to cut us up in Edinburgh was priceless!
And its still having the same effect on people who try and outgun it on straight acceleration

Maybe we'll find out one day?
Might be worth you remembering though that when it was built it was the fastest accelerating prouction car from 30 to 60. Faster than a 911 turbo allegedly.

Also have sorted the rear wiper by threading a new main suuply wire from the boot into the tailgate.

Couldn't resist this.
I was coming back from the M1 J20 along the A427 towards harborough and I caught a line of slower moving traffic. As I started to overtake the line of about 4 cars a black focus with twin rear 'zorts pulled out and I had to anchor on to avoid hitting it.
I then dropped it a cog and sat on his rear bumper past all the traffic and he tried to take off into the distance. Only problem for him was that I was having to feather the throttle to avoid hitting the back end of his "fast" machine.
I was giggling like a 4 year old and could see his puzzled expression in the mirror. Followed him all the way back with him trying to get the drop on me out of the villages but he just couldn't. Admittedly I didn't have the grunt to pass him but .......
Hope he's not too suicidal this evening. I wonder how much he has spent on that thing?
I really must get some stickers made up that make it clear its only 993cc!
