Sorry if there is already a thread going on this, the search function is 'under maintenance' and I thought that it would be good to post up here about what we are up to, what training we are doing, tips and so on.

I have just been told that I and rowing Nottingham Head of the Trent on Sunday and I have never rowed in this boat before and due to injury I haven't been in a boat since early/ mid December!
I am bricking it as I cannot bear (bare?) the thought of letting the crew down with my fitness or catching a crab!

So here we go chaps, The Rowing Thread!

I have always fancied sculling, I'm probably going to try it in the summer away from uni. I have heard it brings on your technique loads.

Not quite what I was looking for. This was more about rowing and sculling rather than rowing on a machine in the gym.

Came third in my category in Nottingham Head of the Trent. Bearing in mind that we had only had 2 outings prior to the race and I have been out of a boat since December, I thought that was a good result.

I thought there would be more on here too.
Zod, I know what you mean about the training. There is a lot of it if you want to be good.

Sculling will be in the summer. I like the thought of being in a boat on your own with only yourself to blame for any mistakes. It also just seems a pleasant way to exercise.

6:15! yikes I need to up my game!
I know what you mean about the erg. I wish they had never been invented.
I have to say though, I don't miss the early winter mornings! As I am not a fresher anymore, we go out in the afternoon. Coming in from an outing last year at half 7 AM with ice on the blades a a horrible feeling hehe

If you think ergos are bad try a Gessing!

You will pass out, or be sick, or both.
What's a Gessing? I googled it and there was nothing!
Just did an hour rating 26... Not nice! I had to stop twice to take on water!

40 Minutes !!!!!!!!

yikesyikes

I am currently mixing up very short, very intense bursts of, say 3-4 minuts, a few times a day in addition to one longer 8min+ 2k

40 minutes is just mind boggling.
An hour rating 26s/m for me tomorrow.
bks.

Beautiful day for rowing today!
Fully restored my faith in the sport after yesterdays hungover outing from hell.
It should be sunny all the time.

I'm not racing but I will be down there. Might have a cheeky beer too in the Blue Anchor like we did for WEHORR. Look out for the ginger guy with DMURC people!

50 minute erg rating 22 today. Not good when recovering from a heavy night.
I was pulling a 2:03.0 but then threw up with less than 2 minutes to go! mad
Ended up at 2:07 as I started pulling again with 7 seconds to go.

Throwing up and carrying on shows dedication, but why did it take you 1:53 to get going again? biggrin
There was a lot that came out! It was the most spectacular end to an erg I have seen.

One of the big pieces they used to do in the Olympic Squad was 30mins @ 20spm. 9,000 metres is 1:40 splits.

Matt Pinsent once said:
It's the hardest workout we do regularly, and maybe my favourite. After you've done it two or three times you're constantly trying to better the previous piece. Anything over 9,000 metres is good going. A few of us can do that. 9,000 metres at altitude is still something nobody can achieve.
I saw someone do it once. I think I cracked 8,500 a few times, maybe 8,600. I believe there is someone from the NZ team who recently did something mental over an hour. I'll have to look it up.
That's nuts! how these people keep up splits that low is just insane!

How hardcore are swans?
I know they are pretty resilient creatures but I do feel a bit bad after ttting one with an oar.
A couple of times a swan has been hit 2 or 3 times by the same boat going past and last night 2 of us hit 2 different ones really rather hard as we were practising regatta sprints.
How much can the take? Last nights one was probably hit by me on the wing area.

I wish I was rowing!
I haven't rowed for about a month and haven't had access to ergs either. Starting again next week as I've joined my local club rather than the uni club.

Is Henley as good as the hype makes it out to be?

It is the Wimbledon of rowing. Some of the greatest crews in the world competing next to an Edwardian garden party - but a garden party stuffed with some of the best oarsmen and women to have ever sat in a boat.
Next year, definitely.

Knocked 4 seconds off my average split for 30 mins today. Quite happy with that, I did the last one in late September.

Soar head next week, looking forward to that!

What are you guys up to these days?

Well Soar Head has been cancelled due to all the flooding.
Shame, would have been my first race this year. (Uni years)

Half hour test the other day. Got down to 1.59.0 from 2.02.6 last time. Not too bad I think, considering Christmas was in the middle.

We are going to get decimated on Saturday though, racing in a division with Eton College and some other good crews at Peterborough. Bad times.
