First League game today. 40 overs a side of low rent slogging played on a field recently vacated by sheep.
Todays game is against a team we don`t like so chirping and sledging will be on the cards ~ indeed as I`m League Captain this year it could start at the coin toss. Last time we played them resulted in 3 of us, me included, picking up a 3 match ban. hehe

Game plan:
1.Win the toss, bat and post something around 200.
2.Bowl them out.
3.Go to Pub.

Match report later. smash H67

Bans were nothing to do with sledging. We were due to play them, away in a League game. Lovely sunny morning, they call the game off due to "localised heavy showers". The only game not played that day in 7 divisions of the League. 3 of us go to their ground, bone dry with no track prepared whatsoever. Word around the clubs was they only had 7 players and chose to call the game off due to weather thus gaining themselves 2 points and depriving us of the 6 we would have got if they`d cried off with no team.

We film the evidence and post it on our club website, appeal to the League to overturn the 2 points each scenario and award us the 6. Result ~ decision upheld and the 3 of us banned for 3 matches for "Trespassing and bringing the game into disrepute".

Anyway today:
Us 144 all out.
Them 145-3.
Shambles hehe

Did the other team get any bans for what they did ?!?!?!
Nope, not a sausage. They still maintain the pitch was unfit. Never mind the fact that when we turned up at the ground at around start time in nigh on perfect conditions there was no track prepared. A right old stitch up which wrecked our season.

2nd League game, 2nd defeat.

Us 137-9 them 139-6. Probly 40 runs light but with the side we put out didn`t expect much else. Half the team absent on a Stag Weekend. Only had 9 fielders for half their innings and at one point I had all of them on the offside.

One of their bowlers called our umpire a joker when he called him for a wide resulting in the umpire departing the field. I was batting stood at the bowlers end at the time and had to persuade the bowler to go and apologise to the umpire or it would be game over, fortunately he saw sense and the umpire returned.

When the bowler came out to bat, greeted by the odd joker comment permeating from the slips. He pushed his first ball back to the bowler who picked it up and threw it back at the stumps whereupon the Joker swung at it and smashed it over midwicket. We were reasonably sure that was out obstructing the field but surprisingly, given what occurred earlier, the umpire gave him not out.

A lively old game that was. All mates in the end and a good laugh with the oppos over a pint.

Hammer, judging by your location and scores from yesterday I think I can guess who you play for, so you'll be pleased to know that we gave your rivals from up the road a good stuffin' yesterday!
Yup I`ve worked that out. Nice work old son. Shame we don't play you guys at the moment, always liked your place with the pub in the corner. Tricky getting the minibus through the gate though.

Just been down to the club to start a new wicket, glorious day.
Now all we need is for teams to stop folding due to lack of players. Should have had 7 games so far, instead 5. The return fixtures are probably dead now too.

Well, we should have played 7 as well. Have just about managed the 2 League games and called off 5 friendlies. We very nearly called it quits last month.

League Game 3. Defeat 3.

Win toss, put them in. 30-3 we`re on top. Just couldn't nail it and they ended 205-7.

Our innings started badly, went downhill in the middle and the less said about the end the better. 100 odd all out.

Difficult when you have half the team made up of guys who wouldn`t normally play League games and frankly aren`t good enough. Today I had 5 regulars unavailable, 2 bowlers, our regular keeper and 2 of the top 6. Friday I had 9 players and was a hour away from cancelling. Tough times.

Another Sunday another Defeat. How very tiresome.

Miserable wet morning, reasonably close to calling it off. At home to League leaders who understandably were keen to play and give us bottom feeders a stuffing.

Predictably I lose the toss and we`re invited to field. They get off to a flyer and at half way were 130-0 and we`re staring down the barrel of 300+. Slowly we get into the game with a couple of wickets and we eventually took the last wicket with the last ball of the innings with them at 238. We were reasonably happy with that and a bowling point to boot.

We batted much better than the last few games and ended 190 for 5, gaining a batting point and denying them the bowling point.

I had a decent match ~ took 3 for 42 and bashed my way to 44 during which I invented a new shot ~ an on drive which went for 6 over point.hehe

League Game 5 woohoo We won.

Beautiful hot sunny Sunday, a minibus trip up North to somewhere near Canterbury.

Won the toss woohoo easy peasy decision to bat on a flat hard road. We knew we`d need a decent score and got going right from the off to accrue 238-9 off 40. Village cricket being what it is that sort of score wins 9 times out of 10.

They batted well, one young lad especially so who, if we hadn`t run him out with a direct hit from cover, could well have won it for them. Wickets fell regularly though and they ended 208 all out in second last over.

Failed with the bat, took 4 for 33, drove the bus, captained the side, took a catch and have arrived home with one thumb twice the size of the other due to it getting in the way of a howitzer at gulley. smash67

Game 6, defeat 5. Nightmare ~ Thursday I had 6 players, some serious barrel scraping produced 11 by Saturday, start time Sunday 9 turned up. 4 batsmen and 4 bowlers, one part time keeper.

Lost toss and got put in ~ which suited us as I`d have batted anyway. Somehow we got to 162 all out for a batting point but they just smashed their way past that in less than 25 overs for 4 down.

Sometimes I wonder why I bother. grumpy

Well, now I can play Saturdays I'm back playing Kent League.

Rolled back the years on Saturday, went in at 30 for 4 chasing 238, batted 42 overs for 87 not out and steered us to 180 for 8 for the draw.

Sunday in the Village scored 29 out of 153 for 9. Bowled em out for 127.

Decent weekend.

Thanks chaps. LONG time since I spent that long at the crease. Pressure was off at 30 for 4, just set myself to stay there and bat. I've learned over the years to play to my strengths - square and back cuts, off drives and the occasional pull. I can't play on drives for love nor money so don't bother trying. As long as I stick to that and concentrate properly it works reasonably well.

It's gonna have to as it's becoming clear that at 47 my legs simply can't hack it as a military medium bowler any more and as I can't bowl spin, I've gone from all rounder to just a bat.

Still love the game and will only retire when I'm forced to. And when that happens I'll umpire.

^^^^ Top work there mate.

I did something similar a few years ago when I won the League divisional bowling trophy when I was 41.

When I went up to collect the pot some wag asked if I was picking it up on behalf of my son. hehe

Can't wait for season to start, been in the gym for a month. 10 weeks of indoor nets start soon.

cheers Hammer, I even warned them at last years presentation that I was targeting the bowling cup biggrin

Being just a week away from my 60th , you can imagine how the 20 year olds laughed.

Just got to fathom a way of getting better with the bat ?
I tell my mrs that's why I need to quietly watch every cricket match that is shown on tv

Jealous of your nets arrangement , we still have nothing firmed up.

Blimey, that's some going mate, I'd love to still be playing at your age, that would give me another dozen seasons. Will certainly try to get there but if not I'm gonna be an umpire, I quite enjoy that when the opportunity arises.

Well, blow me. I've just picked up the club bowling trophy for last season. Here it is being checked out by the dog. Must have been a crap season, only took 16 wickets.

We don't start til a week Saturday, a couple of friendlies and straight into Kent League on the 9th May. Been hammering away at indoor nets since Jan, outdoor nets and training started this week.

The boys are looking sharp and chomping at the bit to get going especially with the superb weather we've got at the moment.

Here's hoping for a long hot summer.

Reasonable start to the season. Kent League: played 2 won 1 lost 1.

First game skittled oppos for 38. Won by 9 wkts. Didn't bowl, was only man out triggered by oppos ump LBW for 6. Our opening bowlers: one took 7 for 25. The other`s figures were an amazing set of numbers: 13 overs, 9 maidens, 2 for 7.

Second game: Oppos 266 for 7. Us 223 all out. Took 1 for 31 and scored 23 with the bat. Should never have lost this, were 166 for 2 with 14 overs left. 2 bats going well both on 50 odd. Track was an absolute road so losing last 8 wkts for 60 odd was poor.

Interesting game on Sat. Trip up north inside the M25 to one of those lovely old London college grounds.

Weather was decent, track looked like a batsmans paradise. Turns out the groundsman is an old mate of mine who gave me the heads up that the tracks there don't play as well as they look like they should. As it turned out.

Lose toss, invited to field. Ten minutes in our keeper takes a wild throw on the end of his little finger ~ triple fracture and unstable dislocation, spends the afternoon in Lewisham hospital. So we field for the best part of 50 overs with 10 men.

Wickets fell regularly as the track seamed about and kept low. Took a couple of wickets and they were all out in the last over for 164.

Our openers put on 40 odd for the first wicket with an absolute dolly dropped by point when our skip was on about 10. Expensive as he went on to get 111 as we knocked em off for 3 with 12 overs left.

So we're looking good, played 4 won 3 lost 1. 3rd in the table. Next up we take on the leaders at home.

Not this week, didn't bat, me a couple of weeks ago.

^^^ Good work Chaps.

My season was enjoyable but ultimately disappointing. In the Kent League on Saturdays we got ourselves embroiled in a 3 horse race for 2 promotion places and fell short. Sadly we shot ourselves in the foot as we put out weak sides due to holidays etc and lost 2 or 3 games we should have won.

I had a mediocre season, bowled OK but just couldn't get going with the bat. Several 20s and 30s but only one 50.

Ended with a heel problem that, to be honest, is worrying me. It's OK at the start of the day but by an hour or so after the game it hurts like a bh and leaves me hobbling like a cripple. Scared to get it looked at because at 48 I'm worried it's an age thing, nothing can be done and I'm finished.

Decided to target the clubs batting cup this year.

Even treated myself to a new bat for Christmas.

Step up the Gray Nicholls 5 star Oblivion extreme , picked up the parcel and thought they had put 2 bats in there !

Put it on the kitchen scales , 3 -3 , oh ste , but now 2 weeks on and swinging it one handed in front of the mirror , I am growing into it .

Been doing a bit more knocking in and the sweet spot is huge , and so much better than what I am used to.

Can't wait for the first nets , I can now cover drive like Tendulkhar was trying to ??

Cool, I was once given a ridiculous bat that weighed in at nearly 4lb, a dubious Asian device that saw previous service holding up a railway line on the subcontinent. Awful thing, affectionately known as The Plank from the Punjab. Over the years my bats have got progressively lighter ~ I'm down to a 2lb 8 now, must be an age thing.

Well, I'm back in the gym trying to get into some sort of shape, nets start in Folkestone on Jan 29.
