The theme for the 2014 Goodwood Festival of Speed, now confirmed to be held from June 26-29, as per the provisional dates announced in October, is ‘Addicted to Winning – The Unbeatable Champions of Motor Sport’. This 2014 theme will celebrate the legendary drivers and riders, teams and manufacturers, who have swept all before them in their sport.
The history of motor sport is illuminated by great champions who transcended mere victory to become utterly dominant. From Bentley’s five Le Mans wins in the 1920s, the crushing supremacy of the Silver Arrows in the 1930s and Juan Manuel Fangio’s five Formula 1 world titles in the 1950s, to the superiority of Jim Clark and Lotus in the 1960s, Porsche’s 16 Le Mans wins between 1970 and 1998, and Sebastien Loeb’s nine straight World Rally Championships this Century, all have rewritten the standards of their day.
The same is true on two wheels, where John Surtees, Mike Hailwood, Giacomo Agostini, Kenny Roberts and Valentino Rossi have all enjoyed periods of unassailable brilliance, as have Norton, MV Agusta, Honda and Yamaha. All will be honoured as the 2014 Festival pays tribute to many of the sport’s greatest champions.
MASERATI CENTENARY
Alongside the overall theme, the 2014 Festival will also celebrate the centenary of one of the most glorious of all sports car marques – Maserati. Many of the Modena manufacturer’s most iconic racing cars will be gathered together on the hill, while a selection of fabulous Maserati road cars will have a dedicated class in the Cartier ‘Style et Luxe’ concours d’elegance.
SIGNIFICANT ANNIVERSARIES
Other significant anniversaries will include 100 years since the fabled 1914 French Grand Prix, in which the Mercedes team overcame strong opposition to score a commanding 1-2-3 victory. Mercedes-Benz’s victorious stints in grand prix racing in 1934 and 1954 will also be celebrated, as will 60 years of the Jaguar D-type, the 50th anniversary of the Mini’s first Monte Carlo Rally victory, and the 40th anniversary of McLaren’s first F1 crown.
The 2014 Festival of Speed will feature a glittering array of cars and motorcycles from a huge variety of disciplines, further enhancing its reputation as the world’s greatest celebration of motor racing history and culture.
Tackling the famous Goodwood hillclimb will be everything from early grand prix and endurance machines, to off-road and contemporary cars and motorcycles. Aside from getting close to the action-packed hillclimb and paddocks, Festival-goers will be able to see many of motor sport’s famous faces up close, and witness the exciting sideways action on the Forest Rally Stage.
They will also be able to swoon at the mouth-watering display of supercars, and become a part of the action at the off-road activity fields and family areas. Sebastien Loeb will try to beat the Goodwood Festival of Speed record time, which is currently held by an F1 car, at this year’s event.
Nick Heidfeld set the current record time of 41.6 seconds in a McLaren-Mercedes MP4-13 in 1999.
Formula One cars have been forbidden from tackling the hill at full speed since Heidfeld set the record 15 years ago.
Leob will try to beat the record in the Peugeot 208 T16 he won last year’s Pikes Peak hillclimb in America with. Its 3.2-litre V6 twin-turbo engine produces around 875bhp.
The nine-times world rally champion lowered the Pikes Peak record by a minute and a half after its surface was changed from gravel to tarmac.
This year’s Festival of Speed will also mark the 50th anniversary of John Surtees’s world championship victory.

This year’s Central Feature, designed by renowned sculptor Gerry Judah, will be the most architecturally challenging and spectacular installation ever seen at the Goodwood Festival of Speed and is sure to be a visual highlight of the June 26-29 event.
Since its invention in 1886, the automobile’s performance potential and reliability have been put to the test time and time again: right from the very early days, Daimler and Benz vehicles were taking part in events in Europe and around the world - winning races and repeatedly setting new speed records. This year is also the centenary of the incredible victory in the 1914 French Grand Prix on the dust-covered roads around Lyon, where Mercedes racers beat Peugeot to record an historic one-two-three finish.
Of the Mercedes GP machines that enabled Christian Lautenschlager, Louis Wagner and Otto Salzer to take that spectacular victory on 4 July a hundred years ago, only three are still in existence. They will all be present for what is set to be the largest automotive garden party ever staged at Goodwood.
Mercedes motor sport success at all levels will be marked, with everything from GP-winning Silver Arrows of the pre-war years, to the monstrous Sauber-Mercedes C9 and CLK GTR sportscars of the 1980s and ’90s, plus saloon and rally cars, and the current F1 team and drivers, which have made such a strong start to the season.

A cavalcade of superstars from motor sport’s past and present will wow a capacity crowd at the Goodwood Festival of Speed on June 26-29, which celebrates the theme: ‘Addicted to Winning’.
Formula 1 world champions Emerson Fittipaldi and John Surtees, and Sebastien Loeb – the Frenchman the most successful driver in the history of FIA World Championship motor sport – will head an all-star line-up at Goodwood.
The 50th anniversary of Surtees’ 1964 F1 crown, which made him the only man to win world titles on two wheels and four, will be celebrated with a display of 11 cars and three motorcycles raced from his unique career; among them his championship-winning Ferrari 158.
Fittipaldi’s 1974 F1 World Championship – his second, and the first of 20 for McLaren – is now 40 years old. This milestone will be marked by the Brazilian driving one of his race-winning M23s from that season.
Frenchman Loeb, who has won a record nine World Rally titles and 78 individual rally wins, will drive Peugeot’s monstrous 208 T16 Pikes Peak car up the iconic 1.16-mile hillclimb in pursuit of Nick Heidfeld’s 41.6-second record that has stood since 1999. He will also drive a Citroen, for whom he is competing in this year’s World Touring Car Championship.
Richard Petty and Al Unser will bring American showmanship to the event. Indy car legend Unser will drive the 1978 Penske Lola-Cosworth in which he took the third of his record-equalling four Indy 500 victories. Meanwhile, NASCAR’s ‘King’ Richard Petty, with an astonishing 200 race wins and seven championships to his name, will get back behind the wheel of his most winning car of all – the #43 Plymouth Belvedere in which he won astonishing 27 races during the 1967 season.
The Le Mans 24 Hours plays a strong part in proceedings with multiple winners of the event – including the most successful driver in the history of the race, Tom Kristensen – taking to the hill in a variety of machinery. Joining the nine-time winner will be fellow Audi legend Emanuele Pirro, Derek Bell, Henri Pescarolo and a host of others, including new Porsche sportscar recruit Mark Webber.

Supercars Battle Against the Clock and World Debut of New Honda NSX at Festival of Speed.
For the first time in Goodwood Festival of Speed history, supercars will battle against the clock as part of this year’s Michelin Supercar Run.
Road-going supercars will do battle in a bid to reveal which manufacturer produces the fastest production machine.
With representation from many of the world’s prestige manufacturers during the timed section on the Saturday afternoon of the event, an intense contest is guaranteed on the 1.16-mile hillclimb.
The Festival of Speed, now firmly established as the world’s leading outdoor automotive festival, will feature the global launch of Honda’s all-new NSX, which will be the first supercar to feature a three-motor hybrid powertrain.
Other new models appearing include Volvo’s new V60 Polestar – already a winner in race trim in Australia in its debut season and the Jaguar XFR-S Sportsbrake.
As ever, the Moving Motor Show, held on Thursday, 26 June, will be a hotbed of manufacturer involvement with presences confirmed by: Audi, BMW, Citroen, Dacia, Ferrari, Ford, GKN, Honda, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Peugeot, Porsche, Renault, Rolls Royce, SEAT, Skoda, Toyota and Volvo.
For the first time in Goodwood Festival of Speed history, supercars will battle against the clock as part of this year’s Michelin Supercar Run.
Road-going supercars will do battle in a bid to reveal which manufacturer produces the fastest production machine.
With representation from many of the world’s prestige manufacturers during the timed section on the Saturday afternoon of the event, an intense contest is guaranteed on the 1.16-mile hillclimb.
The Festival of Speed, now firmly established as the world’s leading outdoor automotive festival, will feature the global launch of Honda’s all-new NSX, which will be the first supercar to feature a three-motor hybrid powertrain.
Other new models appearing include Volvo’s new V60 Polestar – already a winner in race trim in Australia in its debut season and the Jaguar XFR-S Sportsbrake.

Maserati will celebrate 100 years as one of the world’s foremost luxury car manufacturers with a staggering display of cars from the past century at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed on 26-29 June.
More than 20 of the iconic machines will take part on the Goodwood hillclimb, which mixes the very best of motor sport and motoring at the world’s largest automotive garden party.
Established in Bologna on 1 December, 1914 by brothers Alfieri, Bindo, Carlo, Ettore and Ernesto Maserati, the first car to bear the name of the family – and the famous trident logo – was completed in 1926.
One of the earliest machines to roll off the production line; a Tipo 26B raced in 1928, an example of which competed at the Indianapolis 500, will be the oldest vehicle in the collection, which will have its own class at the 22nd Festival of Speed.
Maserati’s greatest motor sport achievement came in 1957 when Juan Manuel Fangio won the Formula 1 World Championship in a 250F. Two versions of the car, which was also driven to grand prix wins by Stirling Moss, will be present, along with other single-seaters from the pre- and post-war eras.
Maserati’s sportscar achievements will also be celebrated, including its four consecutive Targa Florio victories from 1937-40. Bringing the story right up to date will be former GT1 world champion Michael Bartels in a 2004-spec MC12, the type of machine in which the German has won the Spa 24 Hours on three occasions.
For those with an eye for automotive beauty as well as speed, the Cartier ‘Style et Luxe’ will feature a dedicated class of 1950s Maserati grand tourers. Proof, if it were needed, that the Modena marque has produced some of the most beautiful cars of all time, as well as some of the fastest.
