I have two pairs of Mavic Kysrium Elites, both from around 2005. One pair is in excellent order, the other has worn-out rims, but the hubs, bearings, freewheel and spokes all seem to be in fine fettle.

I hate the idea of throwing them out, and I quite like the idea of building a pair of wheels myself, so I thought about rebuilding them, but replacement rims look to be around £70 apiece, and I'd need to buy a truing stand which would cost another £70-odd - so it's hardly a bargain option.

Waste of time? Better way of making good use of them?

There does seem to be a black art to it, with umpteen spoke lengths available so no guarantee that the newer rims would marry-up.

A pair of Shimano R501s would give me new winter wheels for £80 all-in...
