Worth keeping in use? Shimano DX PD-M636 SPD's.

I have a set of these on my old bike, always liked them (despite the weight penalty) as I could ride clipped or just hop on for a quick blast.



Now I'm aware these are getting on a bit, and mine don't look as neat as in that picture, so they'll likely need a bit of attention. My question is, are they worth saving and putting on my new incoming bike?

I've just ordered Shimano M530s to go with my new bike. They're cheap (£35) but very good apparently.

They 'seem' to work ok, I was last clipped into them a fair while ago (5 years or so, have just ridden in trainers/walking shoes since) and won't be able to try them until I buy some new shoes.

And no, its not red, bright orange, that sort of goes.

Have looked at just changing them for new ones, I was astonished at the price of the ones you posted, always imagined SPD's started in the £70 region, certainly my DX's were around that in 1997.

Ordered those 530's, but from my bike shop as I'm picking up my new bike from there anyway tomorrow. Cost a little more than £20, but not unreasonably so.

It was part altruistic, part laziness really, didn't want to have to faff taking the old pedals off on collection day...can't delay the obligatory kitchen/bike picture for even a minute.

To be frank, I've never ordered anything bike related off the internet until a helmet and new pair of shoes this morning. Always used to use a combination of shops in Shrewsbury (both of which still going strong and one has even expanded) and Church Stretton (that ones long gone - the son now owns a rather good shop in Shrewsbury also).

There's a good topic in itself. The truth is, I've used all of them at one point or another.

The first bike shop I ever used when I got 'into' bikes properly at 13 was Stan Jones, now just Stan's. I admit, I haven't been in their new location at Wyle Cop (going to pop in on Sat actually), and I miss the old tiny shop by the Welsh bridge. I notice they don't sell Marins anymore, which was my first proper bike.

My second bike came from Dave Mellor Cycles, and they were where I'd save my pennies for the latest thing, from the dx pedals mentioned in this thread, to my first set of Rock Shox (bright yellow Quadra 21R's). I haven't been in there in ages, although I'm often around the corner at the Boat House when the weathers good! That shop had a great riding culture back in the 90's, regular events up at east ridge/snail beach, at 15 I adored the place! Uni moved me away and I used Sunset bikes in Cardiff.

Last one I know is the new one, The Trailhead, just around the corner from Dave Mellor's. It's a 'boutique' bike shop, and I mean that in a nice way, it's great, good kit, small but with great people. I haven't bought anything yet, and only this week discovered they stock Cube's. If this week had gone differently I might have ended up buying from there, as it was I ended up with a Kona. They stock a water bottle with the local hills listed on them, this amused me. The owner is the son of a chap who used to own a decent little shop in Church Stretton (which has been gone for a long time).

That's all that I know. The bike I'm just getting is from a shop near Stourbridge, again, they are great. Amazing choice of quality shops.

Inside I'm basically a 15 year old in a 32 year olds body, bikes to me should be lurid, bright and in a shade that would generally be ghastly in any other situation.
