Seems like Jeremy Vine has been busted for speeding in Hyde Park. His heinous crime, doing 16MPH in a 5MPH limit.

If he was doing over 90 in a 30 would you ask the same question?
Speed limits are limits, they may be stupid (and often are) but that doesn't mean you can ignore them.
WT effin F?Speed limits are limits, they may be stupid (and often are) but that doesn't mean you can ignore them.
You do realise he was on a bicycle? There are *no* posted speed limits in the park and speed limits do not apply to bicycles on the road.

I'll double check that but I am not sure they don't (I have never been fast enough to really test the issue!)Edit: Apparently not. Every day a school day.

Given that I know of three in Oxford last year, one broken sholder, one broken arm and a death, and the police didn't even record the first two, I suspect the number of 60 a year may be down to lack of recording. In the first one there was witnesses and the police response was "its a cyclist. We will never catch him". He was cycling on the pavement and hit a friend of mine who was in pain for six months and still does not have full use of her arm.
Equally, the danger to cyclists is vastly overstated, but that dosn't stop the likes of road.cc constantly complaining about how dangerous the roads are. So let's not get in to arguments about statistics.
Whatever the argument for and against what is right, he was brakeing the speed limit, which is legal under the royal parks bylaws, and was not a little over, everyone knows the diffrence between 16mph and 5mph.
Unfortunately the 5MPH limit isn't signed, so how do you know you're not complying?Equally, the danger to cyclists is vastly overstated, but that dosn't stop the likes of road.cc constantly complaining about how dangerous the roads are. So let's not get in to arguments about statistics.

Coast along at a fast walking pace piece of piss
But how do you know you're doing 5mph or less? If you're going to say 'stick to 5mph' then you need to know what 5mph is - a 'fast walking pace' is vague at best. Plus, when you're on a bike, how on earth are you supposed to know what a 'fast walking pace' is if no-one's around who's walking fast for you to guage. You didn't really think it through properly, did you?

And how do you know the limit is 5MPH when it isn't posted?
What's the speed limit on the M4?A cyclist has no speed measuring device and the limit is unknown.

What a bizarre argument. There is a limit in the park, Vine exceeded the limit and got stopped by the park authorities.
I'm not defending the silly rule but merely pointing out that a defence of "I didn't know about the rule and anyway I can't measure my speed" is a pathetic defence.
If a Polish driver came here in a car with a faulty speedo should we let him off for doing 100mph on the M4?
There is no need for pathetic analogies, just discuss the point.I'm not defending the silly rule but merely pointing out that a defence of "I didn't know about the rule and anyway I can't measure my speed" is a pathetic defence.

What limit? The 5mph limit for motorised vehicles when on the path?
No. The 5mph limit for cyclists/rollerbladers/etc. in that particular area of Hyde Park. You might have heard in the news that Radio 2 DJ Jeremy Vine was caught and stopped by the Park authorities for exceeding the limit?v12Legs said:
The park police confirmed that the limit doesn't apply. See my link a page or so back.
Ah yes,The Royal Parks said:
Among other things, he was told that “there is no legal speed limit for cyclists in the Royal Parks,” but cyclists were requested to adhere to the 5mph speed limit that applies to motorists on the path he was on, “even though [for bike riders] it is not a legal limit
