Freehub on my Boardman Road Comp is noisy and on its way out so starting to think about replacement wheels as the freehub is OEM and looks like Halfords may not be able to get them anymore.

Current wheels are Mavic cxp22's with OEM hubs/freehub.

I dont want to downgrade (but i'm guessing the CXP22's are entry level) but also havn't much budget - probably no more than £150 for the pair.

Have seen / been recommended on another thread Shimano R501's:

http://www.merlincycles.com/shimano-r501-wheels-49...

Cant find a rim weight to compare to the CXP22's but comparing overall wheel weight they seem marginally lighter than my CXP's.

Has anyone had a set or have any other recommendations - would want it to fit my existing SRAM PG1050 cassette as I love the bigger climbing gear.

Key priorities for the wheels need to be:

- Reasonably cheap
- Strong - i'm ~180lbs but do most of my riding on country lanes which have variable surfaces. Should I be worried about the reduced spoke count ?

I'm riding approx 80 miles / week split 20,20,40 but am aiming for a 100 miler later this year. Cant afford to upgrade the bike anytime soon and TBH am very happy with it.

Do road wheels generally all come with the same length axle or will I potentially need to change this out or add spacers to get them to fit the frame ?

Thanks for any recommendations / comments

Hmmm seems like there's lots to choose from....

The superstar components at £147 (20% discount) are the lightest weighing in at 1492 for the pair and I liked the garmin mount i had off them earlier this year.

3 recommendations for Fulcrum but all different wheels - is there much difference between the 7's, 5's and Quattros that I would notice ? The Quattros can be had for £166 + delivery from bike-discount, the 5's for £144 and the 7's £108.

Are axle lengths generally universal on wheels - will all of the above just slot straight in in place of the CXP22's that came on the bike ?

If i'm going to spend a little more than just a £65 set of R501's to replace the borked CXP22 then i'm hoping that i'll notice a difference (it certainly seems to be suggested above that I will)

Thanks

Thanks for the continued feedback - been really helpful.

Am erring towards the Fulcrum Racing 5's as the ammount of wind around here the last month or so probably steers me away from the Quattros deeper rim (thanks for the PM offer).

Just one more quick query - has anyone had to replace bearings or freehub (the reason for my upgrade) on the 5's or any other fulcrum. A quick look on Bike-Discount suggests that they are not cheap at 50-60 quid compared to say shimanos. Anyone found servicable parts cheaper or new single wheels for sale ?

Also how have people found they stand up in the wet eg bearings etc.

Has anyone got a similar price bracket Shimano wheel (given apparent cheaper parts) that they can recommend.

Finally the shimano compatible 5's on Bike-Discount are listed as LG and HG - any idea what the HG stands for.

Price match request is in with wiggle so will pull the trigger on the 5's later unless any other worthy suggestions leap off the page.

Thanks again

Thanks for the info YellowJack & others.

The LG & HG codes were applied to a specific wheel on the Bike-Discount website - not different variants of the same wheel.

http://www.bike-discount.de/en/buy/fulcrum-racing-...

The LG in this case is because the latest version is a 'large' - larger rim width than the previous model.

It was the HG which I was unsure of.

Took the noisy CXP22 out again for 30 miles today and it was actually a lot quieter. I'd only ridden approx 500yds to test it the other morning after new bearings and it was really noisy - only thing changed was i'd had the QR open so might not have tightened it as much as before (I tend towards quite firm closure).

Having been paying more attention to the wheel I did a comparison spinning the front and rear wheels by hand with about the same force. I was getting about 50 revolutions of the front wheel to about 10/11 of the rear. It also felt a little more hard work riding today (ignoring the wind) particularly noticable uphill where I was having to work hard to keep pace with my riding buddy wheras i'm normally breezing ahead (or maybe he was up for it today and I had lead legs on). I get that the rear has a freewheel which is loaded up by the chain but would you expect it to spin up that much less than the front ? Would over tightening the cone bearings add this type of resistance ?

Whilst i'm making an industry of tapping the PH collective knowledge ........ the Fulcrum suggest weight limits for the Racing 5's in the user manual:

- If you weigh over 109 kg/240 lbs we advise you not to use this product. Non compliance with this warning can damage the product irreversibly.

- If you weigh 82 kg/180 lbs or more, you must be especially vigilant and have your bicycle inspected more frequently (than someone weighing less than 82 kg/180 lbs). Check with your mechanic to discuss whether the wheels you selected are suitable for your use, and to determine the frequency of inspections

I'm pretty much bang on the 82kg having shed 9.5kg since Jan but accept i'm most likely to creep up rather than down (whilst there's an incentive to keep the belly at bay anything less than 12.5 st on me at 6ft leaves me with twiglets for arms and legs !). Have people in the 82 to 109kg range got along fine with the 5's or is this a fly in the ointment. Moving to a 20 spoke wheel just makes you think.

Price match has been agreed with Wiggle but if anyone has spotted 5's for under £144.36 (£148.80 - 3% Quidco) then please do shout out.

Thanks again.

I'm 80kg, and I ride cyclocross on my Fulcrum 5s, other than a dropped chain breaking two spokes I haven't even trued them up. I also ride some of the local MTB Challenge rides on my 'cross bike, the wheels are well up to a bit of abuse, so for road riding I can't see them being a problem.

One careful owner...
Are they just the standard 5's or are they the CX versions ?

Update on the Fulcrum Racing 5's having just got in from my first trip out on them - short 16 mile ride as i'm off for a quick 9 holes now.

- much smoother - i could see the old cxp22's vibrating away like mad over rougher surfaces - I therefore felt much more confident on some of the downhill sections.

- Felt like I was getting more power down on the climbs - just felt stiffer smile. I normally climb in the saddle (just doesn't feel right out). Had a little stint out of the saddle on a climb today and it actually felt ok.

- Nice freewheel noise

- Red nipples !
