It's coming to that time of year again for the annual pilgrimage to the sea, complicated this year by Abelio trains putting severe limitations on bikes especially on the saturday, which limits the opportunity for a drive out/train back/do the dynamo then home.

usual options apply, 2 drive out to the finish, leave 1 car and return to start in other etc.

I'm up for a PH crew and am happy to leave my estate in suffolk with 4 roof racks and possibly even 3 boot mounted if required.

All depends on your expectations and patience, with the coach you are beholden to their schedule maybe waiting on the beach for 4-6 hours for transport back, with a car waiting it's up to us.

I'll be 125 years old by then, so probably well dead.

Or the thread is a bit premature.

Or I'm a pedantic knob.

Yeah, it's probably the last one!
smile it's all in the planning wink

Besides, the Aero Hot team car is now part of PH folklore.

If you're happy to park it up at the finish I could drive up to Dunwich and bring you back to Hackney on the Saturday afternoon. I only have an E46 coupe, and no rack, but the rear seats fold down and I can get my medium bike in with just the front wheel off. I fully expect I could get your (presumably large) bike in by lowering the seat post, if needs be. I could only get one bike in at a time though, but could drop you at the start and go back home to pick up my bike afterwards, if you didn't mind having to hang around in the start pub for, at most, a couple of hours?
Sounds like a plan or I could drop my bike at yours, convoy up and not have to faff with taking bikes apart?

Happy to drive into London and bash down the a21 after, whatever is needed.
Thinking of parking the SAAB in Yoxford which is about 4 miles from Dunwich, Dunwich itself is chaos on the Sunday with coaches and removal vans for bikes.
Al if you're staying at Swerni's I can get you both back there after, or if you're parking Dunwich end we can get you into town on sat I'm sure.
Lots of options.

You can park on the street by the pub before the carpark or in the main carpark, there is plenty of room.
Last year they had a one way running and the whole thing was a clusterf**k, Pedalling 3-4 miles back down the route would definitely be my preference.

There is a 4 bike per train restriction from Darsham on the Saturday, Abelio trains have put strict restrictions in this year, including a 50 per train max from Ipswich on the Sunday, pre-booked only and no service from Ipswich on the Sat.

SixPB, Swerni whereabouts are you based?

Richard the idea of riding into London traffic after 30 hours awake isn't too appealing, it's not the distance honest wink

I've not got the miles in my legs to say yes to such a stupendous endeavour.
I do however have a mildly crazy streak that says fk it why not, what could possibly go wrong.

I can drive out with capacity for 5 bikes but would want a seriously relaxed pace into London, I'm talking zone 2, chatting, no silly sprints for signs (I'm my own worst enemy when it comes to that st, just ask gruffy about the cyclocross comment :P), with ample time for recovery etc.

I'll also need a nap at the beach, driving after 350k riding 30 hrs awake on no sleep is not covered but my mildly crazy streak.

Worst case scenario I'll chuck one of you the keys and go sleep in a bus shelter wink

Richard makes sense if I take you up?

And ofc pick up 6PB and if swerni's up for a double him too.

Imperial for me, it's 112 miles despite the various claims of 120 (if you leave from soutwark and lap a few roundabouts you might just get away with that...), I've always left at 9 because reason and frankly we'll be faster than most and overtaking people is fun wink
Based on beer mat maths (fag packet maths is for non cycling types) 10 hours is loads to cruise back, which says to me 8AM is v. early, 10:30?

Sorry to throw another idea in, we could pedal to Cambridge and train down, it's a different service provider and there's no restrictions, it'd chop 40 miles off and allow for a lunch time departure from Suffolk.
Thoughts?

Edit to add, might work for you too, Cambridge is easily accessible by road, could meet you there, train into London for the start, an easy place to drop you back to after the finish.

Concerned that the 4 bike Abelio limit might catch us out and mess things up by relying on good fortune. Can we book bike tickets on cambs-london?

I'd vote for a simple there-and-back. Easy logistics and not relying on any external services. In for a penny and all that. But I can't make it, so my vote doesn't count.
Using Cambs gives us a later start, I'd be leaving Sussex at 8AM rather than 10AM, it shortens the route and builds in some downtime for glycogen recovery, gives Al a destination easily accessible from up north with a pre-determined rendezvous time but still keeps us the right side of 300k for bad-assness wink

That's good, it's only 30 miles to Ipswich and I have a good off A12 route we used last year, does it work for Al? join us for a wee 30 mile warm up?

I'd rather not leave things to chance, if we can book bike slots then great, if not then reconsider.
