Great feedback so far, thanks. I live in the New Forest so doesn't need to be too "rad". I currently have a Specalized P1 progressive hardtail, which has been good if not a bit heavy. Looking for a bit of an upgrade.

That's some big ass forks on a HT, where are you planning on going with it?
Nowhere other than locally round the forest. Might this be overkill?

Taking on board the comments about the 140mm forks, I've two other possibles:

Any good? I'm a roadie most of the time, but do enjoy the occasional MTB ride around the New Forest, and I'll be towing my little one round next year too. He's had a seat on the back of my Specailized for the last few years.

Cheers Pablo. I'm adverse to getting a 29er, I have a cross bike and I think they'll be too similar. Really want smaller.

Would I regret a 26?

Back on Topic, has the OP considered the new Bird Zero TR?

http://shop.birdmtb.com/featured/zero-tr3.html
I didn't acknowledge this at the time, but the Bird Zero has jumped to the top of the list. I've not read anything bad about them. Torn between the Zero 3 or the Zero TR3 now.

Typical PH budget creep.

Not sure why yo' buy the regular Zero over the TR3, I assume they're going to phase it out as the TR is lighter and has more up to date geometry so most likely better uphill and downhill.

Just swap the tyres for the free High Rollers.
From talking to them the Zero is being phased out, they don't have any Large left on their website. Been advised there is an offer coming on the Zero TR shortly.

Never ridden a carbon MTB before. Should be good.

will make an effort to head down to Moors Valley on it soon. I think I'm going to concentrate on hours rather than miles next year.

Grumpy now. The Scott was supposed to turn up today so I rode the cross bike in bringing spare pedals and shoes so I could ride the Scott home after playing in the forest for a few hours. Annoyingly the Scott hasn't been dispatched yet. Not sure I can be arsed to go for a ride now tonight frown
