I've stupidly agreed to do the London to Brighton ride in June. Seeing as it's two months away I have started doing some riding.

My main problem is my arse. It is killing me at the moment. Even after short (five mile) rides.

I've got some padded shorts and legging things (or as my girlfriends son said 'why are you wearing tights?'), and I'm sure they help, but God it's still painful.

If anyone has any tips, they will be most welcome!

I may have got a bit confused, having just googled images of them (glad I hadn't eaten!), it isn't saddle sores I have. Just pain when on the bike, which by the sounds of it is just a case of getting on with it and getting as much time as possible in the saddle as possible.

Today was my longest ride, 10.7 miles. It honestly felt pretty good. Only came back as I was bored (doesn't take long!). Arse didn't hurt until towards the end.

Strava says I hit a top speed of 47mph...find that hard to believe, but if true bloody scary!

One thing I need to work on is my water intake. I've yet to master the skill of cycling and drinking, and don't like stopping as I hate starting again, when I do stop I drink most of my 600ml bottle in one go. I am waiting for a Camelbak though so hopefully that will help.

I probably don't drink enough during the day anyway, which won't help.

Eat?! I'm guessing it's not a take away pizza!

Is this something I need to worry about for my short rides at the moment? Or how about when I'm doing the London to Brighton?

47 MPH ! What are you doing early July ?
More I think about it, more I think it must be wrong. It was downhill but even so!

Was that aimed at me for early July?

I'm liking cycling even more if it involes stopping for pastries and beer! Can't be many sports that it's ok to do that.

Saddle turned up today...the old one was a bh to get off!

It feels better from the short ride to my girlfriends today, but long ride on Monday will tell.

The cream stuff turned up as well...am I doing it right...applying be it to the pad in my shorts? My balls are arse were burning!

Another five miles done today. I was trying to make it longer, but didn't leave mine until 8, I was planning to leave at 7! Will take the long way home smile.

If I'm able to do a couple of 30 mile rides before London/Brighton, do you think I'll be ok for the 50 odd miles?

I mean this in the nicest possible way...I hate you. I wish I could ride without padded shorts frown. Or without arse cream!

Assos crème works fine for me, better than Blue Morgan. I have forgotten to apply crème and can tell the difference.

Sitting on my old saddle compared to the new is nights and day difference.

5-10 psi difference in the tyres can make for a significant difference in perception of damage to the landing gear!
Talking of pressures...mine are currently 100PSI as that's what it said on the pump for a road bike. Is this too much? (I am 127kg if that makes a difference).

15 mile ride after work today, wasn't to keen on going as was up at 4am Friday, and 6am today, but glad I did. Longest ride I've done.

1:15 with a average speed of 11.9mph (I know compared to some that's a snails speed!).

Most importantly, my arse doesn't hurt! My legs did from the sodding hills. It was enjoyable as well.

I'm another one who's signed up to do L2B - only 15 years since I last did it . . .

Wish we had some hills around here to practice on, I'm not looking forward to Ditching Beacon much.
You can have the fking hills around here!

My longest ride today. 23.7 miles. 1,282ft of climbing, my legs are still burning!

The first half was too easy...so kept on going. I was only planning to do a 10/15 miles, but as it felt so easy I kept on going. Turns out it was slightly down hill with the wind behind me. Meaning on the way back, uphill and into the wind.

But, still enjoyed it. Was good fun.

Has anyone mentioned that the prevailing winds come from the South at that time of the year and we'll be cycling . . .due South

Am I helping?

It's downhill though isn't it? As London is above Brighton on the map.
