Let's talk about....

Front (or wrong) wheel drive drag racing.
Now, for those of you unfamiliar with the record, I believe it currently stands at 9.28 seconds in the UK in a slightly more potent than standard Vauxhall Tigra.
What I want to know is how the guys in the US are able to go so much quicker?
Is it down to regulations allowing car specs to differ vastly from the UK racers' or something else?
Also, I'm keen to give the whole thing a go in the next year or so, but need a car to begin with, if you were starting fresh, what would you go for as a starting point? I can think of a few options, but would like to know the general concensus on here too.

That's the record run, not a lot of spec about that I know of, but I know it was making upwards of 700bhp, still uses an h pattern box and is road legal

That was a liner failure at the top end, I think
As for your suggestions of cars, I was thinking much the same, with the VR6, never though anything of the 1.8t and the 6 pot seems to be capable of making more power more easily.
The gearbox, some of the FWD VW gearboxes are fairly strong, but the clutch I agree with, that's not going to be easy to sort.

Normally the first weekend of June.
I remember seeing the VX220 in 2008, that's why I recognised the name!
I was always a little disappointed with the regal/eds nova, never seemed to perform so well on UK tarmac as it did in Germany, nice idea though.
Would be nice to see the Astra in the UK at some point.
