Can a UK citizen drive a Swiss hire car in to France?

Ok, I know they can - I did it sometime last week. But I also set off a speed camera on the French side and then found this article while Googling the consequences:

A Swiss-registered hire car cannot be driven across the border to France, Germany, Italy or Austria by an EU citizen.

I've done it a few times before, but not since the article from May.
