I started doing trackdays about 12 years ago with a fairly standard V8 MGB and since then I have been modifying and improving the car. It now looks like a GT racer and is pretty quick.
For some reason I feel that i have a quest to make the car as good as possible in a DIY way.
Is this normal or do I need help?

Latest mod is a home brewed DRS system for my rear wing which works automatically using valve springs and a linkage. It seems to actually work.

Timed from the video footage after the event.

I realise this is a bit OTT for a trackday car but still good fun.

If you have that sort of passion and commitment, why aren't you racing? You could at least get a race license and do test days?
Maybe I enjoy the safety and fun of trackdays too much.

Not raced so cant comment on wether it is more fun or not. I am having a lot of fun doing trackdays and getting lots of track time. trackdays are safe, less risk of injury or damage to vehicle. I have tried sprinting and found that very boring with hours of waiting around for just a few laps. 20 years ago I might of considered it.
Surely having fun is what its all about.

All you do is drive the car, it is fully automatic. Starts to work at about 100mph with the wing flat by 120mph
Other than car speed I have no manual control of it, The angle of atack can be pre set for both wing up and wing down.
I was very lucky to get the spring rates and linkage lengths right first time. The springs are actually Rover V8 valve springs.

I am doing this for the challemge and for fun. with 330bhp the MG was very tail happy and flighty. Since fitting the rear wing with the DRS and the front splitter the car has become much more stable and easier to drive fast. Also lap times have improved.
I would love to test it in a wind tunnel but its not worth me spending the money!
Cheers

Im glad im not the only one!
I think I should change the name from a Drag Reduction System to a Variable Downforce System.
People assume that when it operates the downforce disapears. In fact when it operates the angle of attack changes from the pre set maximum to a pre set minimum. So I still have downforce in fast turns and on straights and the wing still generates some drag. In slower corners ( below 100mph ) the angle of attack is steeper so generating more downforce. Hope that makes sense.

If you watch the video clip, Folly is the only corner at Castle combe where the wing is down. Turn in is very good. Car has 330bhp and weighs about 980kg.

Thanks guys. Visually the wing takes a bit of getting used to. I definitely wont be taking it off though.
Here is a better view of it in action.

Well it seems I just cant leave the car alone.
Since last post have fitted jenvey downdraught throttle bodies, canems ECU, TA performance heads, completely re hashed the rear suspension with trailing links, coilovers and my version of a Mumford linkage. Custom ally fuel tank, Trans-x diff (replacing the ATB). 429bhp on rollers.
maybe I should just drive it now!

Thanks for the reply's.
I am Planning to do more track days this year starting at Castle Combe on 24th with lotus on track and then if all goes well at the action day on 25th.
Yes the (so called) DRS probably makes little difference but I enjoyed the challenge of trying to make it work.
its all just a bit of fun really.
The fact that the car is quite fast and goes round corners fairly well is very rewarding.
hopefully should make some interesting vids this year.
Cheers
