I've been contemplating for a long while as to what my next step professionally would be. To be honest, I'm steering away from IT Support and really considering getting into PM in the back of my mind.

I've been in 1st/2nd line IT Support for almost a decade and while I love the technical aspects of the job alongside talking to people about what they need, I can't help feel that I'm losing my love for it slowly. Lately I've been wanting to get involved with the business side of IT and actually working with seniors to roll out and see through Projects. It's something that's been on my mind for over a year now.

How would one go about getting into PM with no management experience? I'm seriously considering doing my P2 and find the role and course in itself quite intriguing. I realise that I can't just walk into a role after completing a P2 exam so some advice would be welcome from the PH masses as I know there's a fair few of you on here.

Others may come at a later date, but to get my foot in the door without a degree I'd imagine the Foundation & Practitioner course is best?

Foundation and Practitioner courses are fine.

If you look at companies like www.knowledgeacademy.com - you will see that any unsold seats they have on a course - the price drops on the Friday before the Monday start to a very low level.

So you can do this very cost effectively.

Edit - Just sent you a PM fella.
Thank you very much for the information.

The Knowledge Academy is who I would have done it through anyway. I did my ITIL Foundation via them too.

I'm wondering if anyone can give me a little motivation with regards to getting into a PM type role after successfully completing their P2. Has anyone gone from a technical support role into a P2 role? If not, then what steps need to be taken to get there? At present there are zero options available to myself in my current role for taking on some responsibility relating to this.

Thank you for the input John. I will look into some providers of the course but feel I may need to watch some YouTube videos or do further reading beforehand. No idea how long that could take.

Thank you for your honesty NorthDave. You are the first that I have read did not enjoy his PM role. I'm beginning to enjoy the fixing things bit as a hobby again so not sure where I stand.

MadDad: excellent information for me to think about there. Maybe going in as a junior will be the better option with a P2 qualification to give me better chance of progression.

Sidewindow: I have found the same and it is beginning to frustrate. No thread Hijack here, all of this is relevant information.

Replies greatly anticipated.

I think I'll concentrate on the Prince2 for the time being. The cheapest I could find the APMIC was £600 with classroom training.

Well, P2 has been booked now for the 19th. I'm doing the weekend course which is split over 2 weekends. The one after will be held on the 10th of January. First half focuses on foundation and the second half on the practitioner.

Edit - after the Foundation, I'll look to apply for PMO roles. At least then I'll have something to back me up (hopefully when I pass)

Thank you M2.

If anyone could guide me on how much studying in hours is required for the foundation and practitioner I'd be grateful?

I've booked the next week off for study time as I simply don't get enough time to myself during the weekdays to study. So hopefully it should be sufficient for me. There quite a bit of pre course reading that's required.

There has been one Junior PM role forwarded to me yesterday to consider. I think I will apply for the role on Sunday after I have completed the first half of the course and received my result for the foundation exam.

Are there any tips that can be provided in regards to short courses and the best way to take in everything being bombarded at you?

Just got my result so passed the foundation. Obviously a preliminary result but at least it gives me the focus now to concentrate on the practitioner.

Thank you for the replies.

So what would be categorised as a good tabbing system?

TAM - I had a look at your images sent via email but have so far only tabbed the processes and themes. Is there anything else I need to do to make it easier?

Example below (ignore the ancient table cover biggrin ) :

So would it be advisable to become familiar with those pages (which I'm halfway through doing) or would tabbing them be much more worthwhile?

Edit - Maybe some more images will paint a better picture, as it were, for me to understand what needs tabs are needed for me to get to the right pages quickly?

Yep, sure did. Many thanks for the links to them. thumbup

Also, thank you for the direction given, I'll try that when I get home and also will have a good look through the emails you'll send, if they're different to the previous set. smile

Edit - Also, I borrowed my friends P2 book and looked through the whole thing, marking and highlighting areas he did and understanding why. Lots of key areas have been highlighted for relevance.

I think I will also need to isolate myself for a while when trying the Practitioner practice papers. The Knowledge Academy gave me their own book with a few past papers in it which may be beneficial for me to attempt.

Yeah... It's a lot more fast paced in the Practitioner. I've gone through the book again and labeled a few other bits and pieces which should hopefully help.

I can't help but feel the wording is actually the only thing that would catch you out if you don't concentrate. Some questions are simple but others are just too time consuming for the marks they have to offer (deleting, adding and moving entry type questions).

Almost through today with the exam tomorrow morning. I'm quite nervous to be honest.

I finished about an hour ago. That wasn't too badly worded in all honesty but did require you to read and understand the question fully before even attempting it.

Some questions required a lot of thought but I managed to remain within the time frame and attempted all questions as well as I could without resorting to guessing.

I reckon I failed though. Unless I miraculously got over half the questions answered right.
