First trip offshore - what do i take

Got a start on an FPSO next week, first trip offshore and was hoping someone could give me an idea of what to take with me.

I've read to take 4/5 pairs of underwear/socks, toiletries, cheap t-shirts, couple pairs of joggers and gear for the gym.

Also read i can take my mobile and a laptop. I don't own a laptop but assuming ok to take an ipad?

What sort of bags do people take, been looking at large lightweight rucksacks. I have bags but they are really big gym bags and i understand i need to keep the weight down.

you will get your clothes washed every night in the laundry however always take spares as they do go missing sometimes

Wasn't sure if my PPE would already be on the rig as i'm going Adhoc. Going to speak to the company today to check this, i'm guessing PPE will need picking up from them if that's the case.

Just wanted to check to see what to take as read different reports on weight limits, what not to take, how many bags etc but it seems to vary.

The barge will have medical facilities but it can be useful to have a small stash of electrolite drinks or Baroccas etc just for when you wake up feeling a bit st / dehydrated. If you're spending a lot of time outside you'll probably find yourself wanting sun cream, skin and hand moisturiser at some point.

Remember that any PPE they provide you with will be boggo stuff so check what they're going to give you and buy your own higher quality items if you think it's going to get on your nerves- Boots, safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection.

Again they'll probably provide you one or stash one in the cabin but a flashlight can be indispensible.

Good pair of earphones, plenty of TV shows / films / music / literature in your tablet or laptop.

Aside from all the practical things, I'd say that you should take some personal effects including a full address book with telephone numbers and addresses. Things happen to mobiles. Might be nice to have some pictures of the people and things you care about, even if it's just an ice breaker for non-English speakers you might work with.

Yes, i've read to take sun cream and moisturiser. I will probably be outside a lot as i'm there on Production side for shutdown and start up of the plant, PTW's etc. It's a 6 month Adhoc post so i'm guessing they want me around for full shutdown and start up.

Thanks guys, like you say, sure i will figure it out after first trip but just wanted to make sure i had the important items.

I'm hoping the other guys boarding the chopper will keep me right, been over a year since done survival so trying to run through my head about survival suit and EBS to ensure i don't look all fingers and toes when i'm getting sorted.


Any other info or advice regarding heliport, chopper, on the rig etc will be greatly appreciated. Just been on phone to agency and they have informed me that my PPE will be at hotel room for me, still waiting on where i'm staying, contract etc. Have read to be at heliport earlier on first trip to get vantage card sorted.

Will train ticket be supplied or is it a case of pay yourself and claim it back? Have been told all rail travel and hotel costs are covered by them.

Thanks Shuvi, it's an Adhoc role but for 6 months which i've been informed is a long stint for Adhoc.

Fingers crossed it leads to something further down the line, have left a fulltime position onshore that i've been in for 10 years. Couldn't pass up the opportunity for this valuable experience offshore though.

I'm going to be working for Maersk on the GP3.
